Springville’s Rowan Jacobi is presented The Gazette’s 2026 Female Athlete of the Year award
Rowan Jacobi was presented The Gazette’s 2026 Female Athlete of the Year award by Gazette sportswriter Jeff Linder on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026. Since 1983, the Cedar Rapids Gazette has honored the top area high school athletes with its Athlete of the Year program. The honor was inspired by the memory of late sportswriter Jack Ogden. Rowan Jacobi, Springville’s second winner, was the Class 1A player of the year as a senior in both volleyball and girls basketball. A three-time first-team all-state basketball player, she ranks 19th all-time statewide in scoring, with 2,103 points, and 12th in rebounds with 1,150. Prep football rewind: a clutch OT win for Cedar Rapids Jefferson
CEDAR RAPIDS — It was just the kind of game Cedar Rapids Jefferson has been known to lose. But not this time. Nope, not this time. A bunch of guys made plays down the stretch and in overtime as the J-Hawks notched a huge pick-me-up win Friday night at Kingston Stadium, 29-22, over Muscatine. It ended an eight-game losing streak for Jeff, whose previous win was last season at Muscatine. “It’s amazing the joy you feel after a win, so I was happy,” Jefferson Coach Ed Miles said. “I was happy for those guys. I was definitely happy for those guys. And trust me, at the three-minute marker, I was not happy.” Muscatine (0-2) had a 22-15 lead and seemingly the game when it intercepted a J-Hawks pass and returned it inside the Jefferson 10-yard line with about three minutes to go. But Jefferson’s defense held, and E.J. Baker Jr. blocked a field-goal attempt that gave it a chance. A long Tyree Turner run set up what would eventually be a touchdown pass from Derek Robinson to Lucas Ranard with 1:04 left on fourth down. Extra point, tied at 22. “We ran that that same play on third down, and

Iowa teachers take summer work-based learning experiences back to the classroom
Amy Tursi teaches students at Marion High School how to survive a zombie apocalypse. The class delves into communication including sign language, Morse code and binary systems for computer science, edible plants and how to grow food and drawing blueprints to build the “ultimate shelter.” It was an effort to engage more students in science that the idea for a zombie apocalypse class was created by Tursi, science teacher Ryley Robinson and Marion High’s assistant principal Chris Raymond. This year, the class will incorporate micro:bits thanks to a one-to-one grant the district received, so each student can have their own pocket-size microcontroller. The students will program these micro:bits as part of the zombie apocalypse class to check a plant’s soil for temperature and moisture and build an automatic watering system. “You don’t want to go outside to water your pea plants if zombies are around,” Tursi said. Tursi and Robinson learned more about micro:bits in an externship — a short-term professional learning experience — over the summer at NewBoCo in Cedar Rapids where they supported the development of computer science educational activities for K-12 students. NewBoCo is a nonprofit that supports entrepreneurship, innovation and technology education, especially championing science, technology,
