Muskingum County fair board sees major turnover in 2026 election | Exclusive

ZANESVILLE – A year marked by resignations, vacancies and debate over the fair's direction culminated in the Oct. 28 Muskingum County fair board election, where only two incumbents retained seats and two former members returned. Six fair board positions were up for election. The two returning incumbents are Heather Noss and Darren Hanby. The two returning fair board members with previous tenures are Derek Watiker, who received 202 votes, and Andy Wilson, with 192, according to the election results, according to the board. Their return comes after resigning within the past year. Asbestos cost dispute leads Coshocton land bank to change contractors

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County land bank is moving asbestos removal work on two demolition projects to a different contractor after obtaining estimates that could save more than $26,000, prompting a dispute with the company originally awarded the jobs. The work will be completed with funding from the Ohio Department of Development. At its August meeting, the land bank awarded seven demolition projects to Land Clearing Specialists. The company later hired Aster Oilfield Services of Bellaire as a subcontractor for the work. More: Land bank reviews bids for 10 property demolitions across Coshocton Co. Aster came back with a change order for three structures related to asbestos removal. Asbestos work estimates were $21,440 for 55668 Township Road 154, $13,246 for 28099 County Road 12 and $12,944 for 28009 Township Road 281. Tiffany Swigert, director of the Coshocton Port Authority and land bank board member, said the size of the asbestos change orders prompted the land bank to seek a second opinion. Estimates from Ohio Technical Services were $6,200 for Township Road 154 and $2,400 for County Road 12. The company has not issued an estimate for Township Road 281 yet. Sons of American Revolution observe Fort Harmar’s 241st anniversary

MARIETTA - The Sons of the American Revolution held a Fort Harmar 241st Anniversary observance Thursday morning in Marietta. Vice President of the Marietta Chapter Jean Yost spoke on the significance of the site in Marietta history, stating the site was used before the ordinance of 1787. He said Fort Harmar was established Nov. 5, 1785, by 150 soldiers of the First American regiment of the United States with the task to "drive off squatters, restore order, and lead America's effort to establish new governance in the Northwest Territory."

Chuck Ellis easily wins Coshocton County commissioner race

COSHOCTON − The new commissioner-elect for Coshocton County wants to focus on housing and economic development in his coming term. Chuck Ellis won the Republican primary in May over Dean Hettinger and Chuck Selders. He faced former commissioner Rick Conkle as a write-in candidate for the general election. Ellis won with 9,759 votes to 297 votes for Conkle, in unofficial vote totals from the Coshocton County Board of Elections. Ellis will replace Gary Fischer, who chose not to seek a new term. Ellis said he received a lot of positive comments from residents in-person and online during the primary and through the general election season. "I really appreciate people saying the things they did. It really encourages me. The Lord put me on this path and those words of encouragement I take very seriously. I'm going to do my best to serve the county with all the gifts and experience I have from over the years," Ellis stated. The 68-year-old recently retired president and owner of Pearl Valley Cheese campaigned on his business savvy and believes that will be helpful in improving the local economic climate.
