Demopolis and Marengo County could see a round of severe weather Thursday, May 9, as a cold front is expected to push through Alabama by Friday afternoon.

Matt Grantham, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Birmingham, said a line of severe storms will be pushing through the state overnight Wednesday, May 8, through Thursday morning, May 9. The Storm Prediction Center has excluded Marengo County from a risk of severe weather through 7 a.m. Thursday, May 9.

SPC placed the Black Belt in an enhanced risk of severe weather from 7 a.m. Thursday, May 9, through 7 a.m. Friday morning, May 10. However, Grantham said there is a lot of uncertainty about the possibility of additional rounds of severe weather Thursday afternoon into overnight Thursday.

“Demopolis is outside the severe weather threat on Thursday morning,” Grantham said. “Areas to the east and to the north will have a greater risk of severe weather. Probably, there’s a greater threat in Georgia.

“Tomorrow afternoon, the threat is very conditional. A lot of that will depend on what happens in the morning hours. We just don’t know exactly what the threat will look like that this time, but it’s something we will keep an eye on.”

Grantham said the main threats from any severe storms Thursday include damaging winds and large hail, but a tornado could not be ruled out. Lows will be in the lower- to mid-70s while highs on Thursday will approach 90 degrees.

    Mother’s Day weekend forecast

After the storms move out on Friday, Grantham said the weather should be near ideal conditions for the Mother’s Day weekend.

“Lows on Saturday morning could be in the 50s with highs in the upper 70s,” Grantham said. “The weather should be great for the weekend.
