Posen teacher receives prestigious national environmental education award

POSEN, Mich. - A science teacher at Posen Consolidated High School has earned national recognition for her innovative approach to environmental education, becoming one of only seven educators nationwide to receive the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. Stephanie Dege Goebel received the prestigious honor from the White House Council on Environmental Quality in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award recognizes K-12 teachers who use transformative, place-based approaches to environmental education. Goebel has distinguished herself by moving learning beyond traditional classroom boundaries and into the community. Her teaching philosophy centers on getting students' "hands in the dirt and feet in the water," fostering both academic engagement and lifelong environmental stewardship. The 22-year teaching veteran has built her curriculum around place-based stewardship education, which she believes creates meaningful connections between students and their environment. "In my experience, it is the ultimate way to connect students to their environment and help them become active participants in their community," Goebel said. "Place-based, stewardship-focused education gives students a way to connect their learning to real-world issues impacting their lives." After relocating to northeast Michigan eight years ago from Indiana, Goebel partnered with the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. The organization

Alpena students advance to world robotics championship after regional competition victory

ALPENA, Mich. — Students from Alpena High School earned their ticket to an international robotics championship Monday after their underwater robot outperformed competitors from across the Great Lakes region. The school's Underwater Research Robotics team claimed first place in the advanced Ranger category at the 2026 MATE Great Lakes Regional ROV Competition, held at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The victory sends the team to the World Championship in Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada this June. Fifteen teams competed in the regional event, demonstrating their remotely operated vehicles in underwater challenges within the Marine Technology Training Tank. Teams traveled from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Ohio and Wisconsin to participate in the competition. Students faced strict time constraints as they navigated their ROVs through a series of tasks designed to mirror real-world ocean conditions. Beyond the technical demonstrations, competitors presented their projects to judges and created marketing displays explaining their robots' design and purpose. The competition divided teams into two categories: Navigator for beginners and Ranger for advanced participants. Ten teams competed in the Navigator division, while five tackled the more challenging Ranger category. This year's challenges aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Decade
