St. Mary's David Wahl honored as MHSAA Scholar Athlete recipient
GAYLORD ― Anyone who has been to a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) postseason matchup, regardless of the sport, has likely heard a familiar advertisement over the loudspeakers. It sounds something like this: "For 37 years, the MHSAA and Farm Bureau Insurance have honored the best student-athletes in Michigan. Again, this year they will award 32 students with $2,000 scholarships based on achievement and leadership in athletics and activities..." If you frequent playoff games, the ad for the MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award may have blended into the background noise. When he was a sophomore, Gaylord St. Mary's David Wahl took note of it. Then, when his senior year came around, he decided to apply. Seniors with a 3.50 grade point average or better and have earned a varsity letter in an MHSAA-sponsored sport are eligible to apply. Those student athletes are asked to send in two letters of recommendation, two short answers to questions and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship. Wahl, a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball, sent in his finalized application in December and waited for a response. Wahl has been a team captain, an All-Ski Valley Conference honoree, received National Merit Scholarship

Gaylord St. Mary senior named candidate for Presidential Scholars Program
A senior at St. Mary Cathedral School in Gaylord has earned national academic recognition after being named a candidate for the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program . David Wahl, who will graduate this spring, is among about 5,000 students nationwide selected as candidates for the 2026 program from an estimated 3.6 million graduating high school seniors. The honor, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes some of the country’s top graduating students for academic achievement, leadership and service. Nominated students represent the top 0.17% of this year’s graduating class. Wahl was motivated to apply because he wanted to bring attention to the talent and knowledge of students in rural areas of the U.S. and Michigan. After reviewing the full list of 189 Michigan candidates, Wahl noticed that most come from larger, well-resourced school districts concentrated in southeast Michigan. Only a small share of the candidates came from Northern Michigan communities. Those included students from places such as Gaylord, Sault Ste. Marie, Big Rapids, Mount Pleasant, Midland, Traverse City and Houghton. “I wanted to showcase what students from small, often overlooked schools can achieve on a national stage,” Wahl wrote in a text to the Herald Times. “I’m proud to

Alpena Schools closed Wednesday due to ice storm, hopes to reopen Thursday
ALPENA, Mich. - Alpena Public Schools will remain closed Wednesday as the district continues recovery efforts from a recent ice storm that left several buildings without power and internet service. Superintendent David Rabbideau announced the closure Tuesday evening, stating the district hopes to safely resume operations Thursday, March 19. "While we continue to navigate the aftermath of the recent weather, APS will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18th," Rabbideau said in a message to families. "It is our hope that we can safely resume operations on Thursday, March, 19th." The ice storm has created different challenges compared to last year's widespread damage that affected the entire county. This year's impact is more geographically concentrated, with Sanborn, Wilson, and Lincoln Elementary schools currently without power. Internet service remains down at those three schools plus Ella White Elementary. "Because the damage is geographically focused, we are evaluating our status on a day-to-day basis," Rabbideau said. "We anticipate reopening schools on Thursday, March 19th. However, we are still monitoring the recovery process closely, and that date may change." District staff will be active across all buildings Wednesday to prepare for a safe return to classes. Bus drivers will report for duty to drive

St. Mary girls basketball proving itself as state title contender
JOHANNESBURG ― Gaylord St. Mary walked into Johannesburg-Lewiston's gym on Friday, Feb. 20, with a target on its back. The leaders of the Ski Valley Conference sported an unbeaten league record, entered on a 12-game winning streak dating back to January 14 and owned a three-game winning streak over JL, going almost two full years since taking a loss in the Otsego County rivalry. No. 4 GSM (19-1, 14-0 SVC) was not about to let any of those streaks die in JoBurg. The Snowbirds dominated their rivals again on Friday night, never trailing after the opening minutes before finishing off a 58-22 victory over JoBurg (9-9, 7-8 SVC), putting GSM one win closer to a second consecutive SVC title and proving, once again, this team is too experienced, too well coached and too talented to let winnable games get away from them.
