Faced with defeat, developers nix plans for 450 Lake Norman homes on jammed road

Facing probable no votes by the Mooresville Board of Commissioners Monday night, Georgia and Florida developers permanently pulled their plans for a total of 450 apartments and townhomes along jam-packed N.C. 150 at Lake Norman. Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the developers’ requests to withdraw their rezoning applications for the homes. “This is not a table (of the requests) and not a rescheduling,” commissioner Gary West said. “When it’s withdrawn, it’s done.” “They kind of read the tea leaves that there was a chance of it not going through,” commissioner Eddie Karriker said about each request. “It wasn’t the right thing or the right time.” Developments along congested highway The developments would have sprouted along one of the Charlotte region’s most bottlenecked highways , N.C. 150, which led the Mooresville Planning Board in June to unanimously recommend denial of the requests. Georgia-based Davis Development wanted to build 261 apartments and two commercial outparcels on nearly 30 wooded and vacant acres in the 800 block of River Highway (N.C. 150). The homes would have been in eight three-story buildings on the south side of N.C. 150 across from the Water Oak subdivision, according to the developer’s plans. The development also would

Charlotte ranks No. 1 for pet-friendly rentals in the U.S.

When it comes to pet-friendly rentals, Charlotte is top dog. Why it matters: From parks and the rail trail to dog-friendly bars and cat cafes, Charlotte has plenty of places to take — and find — four-legged friends. And the city's rental market reflects that pet-loving culture. Driving the news: Charlotte ranks No. 1 among the nation's 50 largest metros for pet-friendly rentals, according to a new Zillow report . 91.6% of Charlotte rental listings on Zillow allow pets, compared to 77.3% nationwide. That's up from 75% in 2024, when Charlotte ranked fourth in a separate Zillow and BARK analysis. By the numbers: Nationwide, 59% of renter households have at least one pet, compared to 37% with children, per the report. Plus, 65% of renters say pet-friendliness is essential when choosing a rental. Zoom out: Austin trails Charlotte by just 0.1 percentage points, followed by Denver, Dallas and Nashville. Raleigh also lands in the top 10 at No. 6. On the flip side, Providence, Rhode Island and New York City have the fewest pet-friendly rentals among major metros. Graphic: Courtesy of Zillow. Between the lines: While Charlotte has plenty of pet-friendly housing, many animals are still waiting for homes. North

Did a Charlotte nightclub really charge $6 for a to-go box? Here's what we know

A to-go box fee listed on a Charlotte nightclub receipt has sparked a viral debate about how much is too much to pay for a meal out. An Instagram user who goes by the name Her Soles reposted a photo of a receipt from STATS Charlotte , which included a $28 dollar charge for Cajun chicken alfredo – and a $6 charge for a to-go box. It also included $1.02 service fee and 15% gratuity, bringing the total bill to $43.27. “$43 for some Alfredo by itself?????” the caption reads. “$12.12 extra for gratuity, a to-go box and a service fee is crazy! I would have told them to keep it. I’ll eat somewhere else.” More than 700 people responded — and many agreed with the original poster — with several commenters saying they would have left the club rather than paying the fees. “$6 for a to-go box is criminal,” Ashley Boulos commented. “Imma stuff the alfredo in my pocket just to prove a point.” “The way I would’ve walked out with the plate and silverware, the glass too,” a user named Nelle wrote. But not everyone sided with the majority. “OK, I hear y’all but STATS food is

‘I want to send a message': Inside NC's blue wave are Charlotte voters fed up with Trump

One by one, an assortment of Republican and independent voters walked out of a south Charlotte polling site last week. Few appeared to be particularly thrilled after having cast their ballots. Several said they felt exasperated about the toxicity of politics in Washington, about the high cost of gas and food, about the treatment of immigrants. They weren’t thinking so much about state or local issues in this election; in many cases, it wasn’t even about the names on the ballot. This was a referendum on President Donald Trump. “People want a more balanced government,” said Jill Heddleson, an unaffiliated voter. “In general, you really should be educated on each individual race and what each candidate stands for, but I guess I want to send a message.” Heddleson and her husband, a lifelong Republican, said they voted straight Democratic tickets in a departure from their typical voting habits. They weren’t alone. The blue tsunami that swept the nation Tuesday included North and South Carolina, where voters elected Roy Cooper and Annie Andrews to U.S. Senate seats. Tar Heel Democrats also flipped the state House and broke the GOP’s Senate supermajority. On Tuesday night, the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party celebrated one
