I-77 lanes to close near Lake Norman for construction of a 10-lane bridge

Beginning Monday, crews will install temporary single-lane closures on Interstate 77 near N.C. 150 exit 36 in Mooresville for construction of a 10-lane bridge, state highway officials said Friday. The closures will allow Charlotte-based contractor Blythe Development to build a new safety barrier wall and add pavement markings, according to a news release by the N.C. Department of Transportation. “Once those are installed, traffic will shift from the median to the outside lanes while crews begin building interior bridge bents,” according to the news release. Officials didn’t say how long the closures will last. Project will ease congestion, NCDOT says The Lake Norman-area closures are part of a $249 million project to improve the I-77/N.C. 150 interchange and widen N.C. 150 from N.C. 16 in Catawba County to the U.S. 21/N.C. 150 interchange in Mooresville. “The improvements will accommodate growing traffic volumes and ease congestion,” officials said. Construction began last year with crews improving storm drainage, installing utilities and moving traffic signals, according to NCDOT. “Bridge construction will be broken into multiple phases, and traffic will be maintained on the existing lanes of N.C. 150 at all times,” according to Friday’s statement. Asheville Rail Corridor Gets $35.8 Million

Aberdeen Carolina and Western Wins a $19.9 Million Grant

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway said on October 28 that it has been awarded a $19.9 million federal grant through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program. The project replaces rail laid in the early to mid 1900s with about 30 miles of continuous welded rail in Montgomery and Stanly counties. The grant supports a total investment of $41 million. The railroad and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will contribute 52 percent as the non-federal match.

If you get a speeding ticket in NC, be prepared for years of expensive insurance

You might think of getting a speeding ticket as a one-off. It sucks, but it doesn’t define you as a driver. Unfortunately, that forgiveness may not be reflected in your car insurance bills. According to a new study from LendingTree, in North Carolina, average auto insurance premiums rise 49.3% after a ticket for driving 11-15 mph over the speed limit. The study analyzed insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services, comparing rates before and after a driver’s first speeding ticket for driving 11-15 mph over the limit. In North Carolina, premiums went up, on average, from $1,173 to $1,752 annually. That’s $579 more per year, or an increase of about $48 per month. And those higher rates could stick around. Aubie Knight, CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina , told me that insurance surcharges usually remain for three years. If a 49.3% increase seems steep, it is. The LendingTree study found that North Carolina’s percentage rate increase is the highest among all 50 states and Washington, D.C., followed by California (41.8%), Michigan (36.5%), Rhode Island (36.4%) and Delaware (31.3%). CATS Changes Gold Line Service for Three Uptown Charlotte Events in November
