Askew, Panola County: From Askews Bluff to Railroads, Country Stores, and Rural Churches
Appalachian Community Histories – Askew, Panola County: From Askews Bluff to Railroads, Country Stores, and Rural Churches. In the northwestern corner of Panola County, Mississippi, near the communities of Crenshaw and Buxton, lies Askew, a small rural settlement whose history reaches back to the nineteenth century. Although it never developed into a large incorporated town, Askew once maintained a post office, supported general stores and nearby sawmills, and served as a station along the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. Its name appeared in government surveys, railroad maps, commercial directories, and church records, leaving behind evidence of a community that played a modest but recognizable role in the economic and social life of northern Mississippi.
