Travis Kelce's journey to becoming one of the greatest tight ends in league history didn't come easy. His road was muddled with academic struggles, off-field issues and suspensions during his time at the University of Cincinnati.

But, with the help of his older brother, Jason, the superstar tight end eventually got to where he is today.

In the spring semester before his final season with the Bearcats, Kelce was suspended for the second time for violation of team policy.

After some convincing from Jason, head coach Butch Jones set some parameters for Travis to return to the team. He needed to record at least a 3.0 GPA.

He finished that semester with a 3.2 GPA and rejoined the team.

“He jokes about it to this day — that he never had a 3.0 in his life,” Jones said, via a story from The Kansas City Star in 2023.

“[I was] doing things that, you know, you didn’t typically see Travis Kelce doing his first couple of years at Cincinnati,” Kelce added.

Assistant coach Kerry Coombs still tells the story of Kelce's struggles and resilience to his players before every college football season.

“He is a great lesson for all of us,” Coombs said. “Not just football players — everyone.”

Kelce, 34, is now heading into his 12th NFL season as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. He and his squad are going after the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat in 2024.
