Street Shooting Trial Day 3: Attorneys Argue Which Cheyenne Man Feared For His Life

CHEYENNE — State and defense attorneys argued Thursday about which Cheyenne man had the most to fear when Adrian Maggos shot Matthew Kerlee in the chest on April 30: The defendant on trial for attempted second-degree murder, or the man who showed up uninvited at his house at 4:15 a.m. after a night of heavy drinking and drug use.

US marshals seize fugitive after Cheyenne chase: five-year manhunt ends

A man who had been sought for more than five years was arrested in Cheyenne after leading officers on a vehicle pursuit in a rental truck, federal authorities said — an outcome that closes a multiagency sweep targeting people wanted on violent and high-priority warrants across Laramie County and the state. The capture removes an alleged public-safety risk that investigators say involved possible firearms and children at a residence linked to the suspect.

Mistrial declared in attempted murder case, new DDA director excited about downtown's future

Good morning, and welcome to the weekend! The attempted second-degree murder trial of Adrian Maggos ended in a mistrial Friday when jurors said they had reached an impasse. They deliberated for 12 hours before saying more talk would do no good. Although the recent severe flooding in the Four Corners region of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah has devastated many property owners, there has been one silver lining: It's added 1.2 million acre-feet of water to Lake Powell. Officials and residents in the Colorado River Basin hope heavy snowfall this winter will further relieve the increasingly desperate situation in the Lower Basin states. That hope extends to Wyoming officials, who heard an update Friday . Cheyenne’s Downtown Development Authority has a new executive director who brings experience in downtown revitalization and community development to the role. Brandon Unruh, who began his position with the DDA earlier this month, previously worked for the town of Kersey, Colorado. Man arrested after 6-hour standoff in October pleads not guilty, faces trial in February

CHEYENNE — A local man involved in a six-hour standoff with law enforcement in October pleaded not guilty Thursday during his arraignment in Laramie County District Court. Brian Kuzma is facing charges of aggravated assault and battery and interference with a peace officer, according to court documents. Cody Jerabek, Kuzma’s lawyer, asked Judge Catherine Rogers to lower his bond, saying that Kuzma is a “lifelong member of the community,” and that they could arrange testing conditions to “alleviate concerns” related to alcohol use. Rogers said she felt that the concern was not related to substance abuse, but rather with how Kuzma’s relationship with those around him had “gone south.” “You don’t have to have lived in the community very long to know the Kuzma family,” Rogers said in court, adding that she believes Brian Kuzma and his family are safer while he is in jail. Jerabek said he did not want to disclose more information than necessary, but he felt alcohol and mental health were at play in this case. Rogers said she feels Kuzma might get worse if he was released and he was still restricted from contacting his family, as he is now. Rogers denied the request, but

‘I literally just leave my house’: In this neighborhood, homeowners say a noisy data center campus is disrupting their lives

When a data center campus moved in across the street from her quiet neighborhood, Susan Jurges said the first thing she lost was the view. The Oquirrh Mountains once stretched across the horizon beyond a grassy field, where goats and other animals roamed. In the evenings, from her kitchen window, she could watch the sun set over the peaks, she told The Salt Lake Tribune . Now, three data centers obstruct that view, surrounded by generators that pump out what looks like black smog. Even so, Jurges said, “I could live with that.” Then came the noise. Trent Nelson // The Salt Lake Tribune There’s a constant low hum. But when the generators kick on, she said, it becomes unbearable. They fire up at random times of the day or night, sometimes for more than two hours, according to her own tracking. Over the past two weeks, she said last Tuesday, it’s happened nearly every day. “It’s really difficult to live in my house and yard when they’re on,” she said. When multiple start up at once, “I literally just leave my house.” The three data centers sit on a campus operated by Aligned Data Centers at 3333 W. 9000
