Carthage college honors fallen firefighter with memorial tree
A tree planted on the Carl Sandburg College campus in Carthage now serves as a living memorial to alumnus and fallen first responder Doug Buckert. The college recently dedicated a purple prince flowering crabapple tree in Buckert's honor, according to a community announcement. Buckert, a volunteer member of the Carthage Fire Department, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call near Burnside on Oct. 2, 1997. Buckert earned an associate degree from Sandburg in 1995 and completed a second degree in 1997 as a member of the college's first mortuary science graduating class. The dedication ceremony took place Sept. 9, which would have been Buckert's 51st birthday. Family members attending the event included Gene and Joyce Buckert, along with Doug Buckert's sister, Carla. Honoring a legacy of service The memorial tree recognizes Buckert's connection to the college and his service to the community. The Buckert family also continues to honor his memory through the Walter Douglas "Doug" Buckert Memorial Scholarship. The award supports a second-year mortuary science student who demonstrates leadership and civic-mindedness in the community and classroom while exemplifying servant leadership.
