BROOKLET, Ga. (WSAV) — The town of Brooklet is getting its own farmers market this Saturday.

The organizer says she’s trying to get fresher meals on her neighbor’s plates.

Bulloch County is an agricultural hub. That’s why it makes sense to Brooklet resident Michelle Wilson that she and her neighbors should be eating food grown there.

“We’re hoping to be able to bring food that everybody can put on their plate that’s more organic, more sustainable,” said Wilson.

They’re kicking off their first-ever season selling in Brooklet.

“This right here will be a place where people can come and they know it was grown right down the street,” said Wilson.

Wilson is the market organizer. She told News 3 the area is somewhat of a food desert – meaning it can be hard to find fresh food in stores to eat healthily.

“You’ve got so many backyard farmers that produce so much great stuff,” said Wilson. “They take their time and grow it from seed to fruition, and they love it. And we want to be able to present that to our community for them to love it as well.”

She says the market has gotten about 20 applications from vendors, but their space at the community center can hold a little more, and house food trucks.

“I’ve had so many people come up to me and say we’re so glad you’re doing this and we’re so excited to have this come,” said Wilson.

The market opens each Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. She said the first Saturday will have fewer vendors since it’s their soft launch. She expects many more people to sign up to sell more in the coming weeks.
