Grand Rapids City Council shifts to lease option for municipal dispensary plans

The Grand Rapids City Council made a site visit to what could be the city’s future municipal cannabis dispensary during its Monday, Oct. 26, work session. The city’s initial plan was to build the dispensary from the ground up, but that plan became less feasible after city officials took a closer look at the finances of Anoka’s municipal dispensary. The Anoka dispensary opened in February and has served as both a partner and model for Grand Rapids’ development plans. Because the dispensary is city-owned, Grand Rapids was able to review its financial data from February through July. According to city administrator Tom Pagel, Anoka’s business plan did not account for the city and state sales taxes calculated into its revenue. An average customer at Anoka’s dispensary was projected to spend close to $200 per visit, but building the tax into sales trimmed that number to less than $100 per visit. The Grand Rapids City Council reassessed the true cost of building and operating a municipal dispensary with the sales tax included, and determined leasing an existing site would be the safer financial decision. Pagel said the updated projections lowered Grand Rapids’ projected average transaction from $98 per visit to $88.

Iron Range bucks the blue move, remains red

Republican candidates got shellacked in Minnesota and across the nation in Tuesday’s general election. The Minnesota House of Representatives, Minnesota Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, all turned blue in a major political tidal wave. However, the core Iron Range remained red. Members of the Iron Range Republican political delegation all won re-election. None of the races were a landslide. But it was a far-different result than other areas of the state and nation. There’s no science to it, but Iron Range Republican delegation members believe there may be a variety of reasons why Iron Range voters continue to place their trust in them. “We did okay, but the state did not do okay,” Sen. Rob Farnsworth, R-Hibbing said. “I think I big part of it is the issues people are concerned about, even though a lot of them are out of our control.” Farnsworth defeated Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) candidate Kim (Kotonias) McLaughlin 21,773 to 18,222. While high fuel and food prices and the ongoing conflict with Iran may have played a role in voters’ decisions at the ballot box, local factors may also have factored into why Iron Range Republicans held onto their seats, say some of

'It shows people really care about their public schools'

School districts across the Iron Range and entire state will be receiving a little financial boost. A Minnesota Constitutional amendment on the state ballot was overwhelmingly approved by state voters Tuesday, increasing funding to all school districts from the Permanent School Fund. With 100 percent of precincts reported, the final vote was 2,067,164, or an estimated 72.91 percent in favor of the amendment and 666,208 no. The number of blanks was estimated at 101,783. “I was just pleased with the results,” Sen. Mary Kunesh, DFL-New Brighton, Minnesota Senate chief author of the amendment said. “It’s not going to fill all the holes in the bucket of education, but we know that every little bit helps. I think about the cost of transportation and the cost of diesel, so this is one way that Minnesotan’s were able to show their support for schools.” “I’m incredibly happy, Rep. Spencer Igo, R-Wabana Township, Minnesota House of Representatives chief author of the measure said. “That was an amazing show of support for the Permanent School Fund, but most of all for all the schools and the students in the state. Everyone came together to do good for all.” What is means is that each

Starting Veterans Day: monthly meal boxes available to local veterans, servicemembers, their families

CHISHOLM—Local veterans, servicemembers, and family members of veterans and servicemembers are eligible to pick up boxes of non-perishable food items from 12—5 p.m. November 11 at United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN)’s building in Chisholm. The free food distribution will take place monthly moving forward through the DAV of Minnesota’s Operation Full Plate program. “Operation Full Plate started with a pretty simple idea, make it easier for veterans, service members and their families to get some help putting food on the table without creating unnecessary barriers or making people feel like they have to prove they deserve it,” said Disabled American Veterans, Department of Minnesota, Legislative Director Trent Dilks. “We started small, learned a lot through our first distributions, and very quickly saw both the need and the opportunity to grow.” DAV of Minnesota recently partnered with the St. Louis County Veterans Service Office (VSO) to bring Operation Full Plate countywide. In Northern St. Louis County, distributions will be held the second Wednesday of each month at UWNEMN’s building. “Expanding to the Iron Range and partnering with United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is exactly the kind of growth we hoped this program could achieve,” Dilks said. They already know these

Mountain Iron Council approves electrical upgrade

MOUNTAIN IRON—If all goes according to plan, some overhead power lines and an accompanying power pole will soon be disappearing along Highway 169. The Mountain Iron City Council this week accepted a quote from Lake States Power for $18,000 to move power overhead power lines in the vicinity of L & M and the Fairview Clinic. The project involves putting a four-inch duct underneath the highway, and the permits are already complete, according to Public Works Director Tim Satrang. The overhead lines are a double-build system that has exceeded its life expectancy, and there’s also a power pole that is being removed as part of the project, according to Satrang. Satrang noted this project is reminiscent to another project, which was unsuccessful due to a number of boulders in the vicinity. He noted the current project is where there is more favorable soil conditions. There was no support for an amendment by Councilor Ed Roskoski for the council to direct the administrator to apply for a grant from IRRRB to help pay for the project. In other matters, the council: • Approved a proposal from $10,000 from MSA to assist in identifying and seeking funding in different areas related to
