A hotel could replace Ithaca’s aging Dryden Road Garage. Here’s the plan
The City of Ithaca is evaluating a proposal to transform the Dryden Road Garage site in Ithaca’s Collegetown neighborhood into a mixed-use hospitality destination, according to a statement from the city. The proposal would maintain public parking, expand visitor accommodations and eliminate the city's long-term responsibility for maintaining an aging parking structure, city officials said. The proposed project would redevelop the property to include a hotel, restaurant and a new parking garage. The project would increase the total number of parking spaces while maintaining the current number of available public spaces. City officials emphasized how the proposal addresses multiple long-term community and fiscal priorities. The project would maintain publicly available parking in Collegetown, support local businesses with increased foot traffic, create new amenities near Cornell University, and shift future maintenance and capital responsibilities away from taxpayers, city officials said. "The proposal presents an opportunity to retain public parking while creating new economic activity in one of Ithaca's most active commercial districts," said Mayor Robert Cantelmo in the statement. "Since conversations around this site first began in the 1980s, the city has envisioned a Collegetown that serves students, residents, businesses, visitors and Cornell University. Adding a hotel and related services can
