80-bed recovery center closes at Massillon health hub after 8 months

MASSILLON – A drug and alcohol recovery center operated by Ohio Valley Physicians Health has closed after about nine months inside a revamped health hub. The 80-bed addiction recovery facility opened in February at the Massillon Community Health & Innovation Center , 870 Amherst Road NE, which is the former site of Affinity Medical Center. It shut its doors on Oct. 16 due to apparent medical reimbursement shortfalls. Chris Zimmerman, chief executive officer of Massillon Community Health, said he's working on "a viable replacement" to occupy the former recovery center's space, adding that the process has been encouraging. A phone message left with a representative from OVP on Oct. 28 was not immediately returned. The recovery center was expected to bring in dozens of long-term jobs to Massillon, said Jackie Rebman, director of inpatient behavioral health for OVP, told The Independent in late February. Between $500,000 and $1 million of renovations had been made in preparation for the two-floor, rehab center in early 2026. Marion County to get new school-based health center

Marion County will receive funding for a new school-based health center as part of more than $55 million aimed at expanding health care access for children and families in rural Ohio. The Marion site is one of 17 new school-based health center sites in 15 counties receiving support, according to a community announcement from Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health . More than $20 million will support the 17 new sites and the expansion or continued operation of another 49 centers in 25 counties. School-based health centers provide primary care services on school campuses, eliminating some transportation and provider-access barriers for families. The centers also serve people living in the surrounding community. The announcement did not identify where the new Marion County center will be located or how much of the funding will go specifically to that site. Fairfield Center for Independence is celebrating the first year of its mobile PACE Unit . PACE, or Progress toward Accessible Community Experiences, is a mobile unit designed to provide an accessible space for personal care at events and in public spaces, according to a community announcement. It includes an adjustable changing table, ceiling hoist and climate control. The unit can be taken to parks, fairs, concerts, sporting events and other public locations where permanent accessible restrooms may not be available. It is designed for people with disabilities, older adults, families with young children and others who need a private and accessible place for personal care, rest or quiet. “Over the past year, the PACE Unit has been part of so many community events, and everywhere it goes, we see the difference it makes," said Josh Stevens, executive director of Fairfield Center for Independence.
