Mourning the loss of a rising star
The Aspen School District and theater community is mourning the loss of one of its rising stars all too soon. Bailey Shaw, who graduated from Aspen High one week ago, died suddenly and unexpectedly in New York City on Tuesday night in what is believed to be an accidental fentanyl overdose. She was 18.

Early Start Times, Sleepy Teenagers
There are few people who enjoy waking up early and tired. High schoolers definitely are not these people. Middle and high school students need more sleep in order to be prepared for school. In 2022, California became the first state in the country to mandate later school start times Middle schools are not allowed to start before eight, and high schools are not allowed to start before 8:30. This upcoming school year, Aspen Elementary, Aspen Middle, and Aspen High schools all are going to start at eight in the morning.
Airport responders learn communication is key at triennial drill
At 11 a.m. sharp Friday morning, an imaginary Cessna Citation X collided with a hypothetical CRJ-700 on the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport runway, sparking a fire in the Cessna and causing catastrophic damage to the CRJ. The fictional incident tested the triage, communication and speed capabilities of Roaring Fork Valley first responders.
Missing woman last believed to be hiking with dog near Aspen
According to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office, a woman named Jennifer Hearn has been missing since June 9, believed to have been hiking up Triangle Peak Trail at about 11 a.m. that day. It's also believed that her brown Irish Setter dog, Tawny, was with her. Not many details have been released related to Jennifer's disappearance, though she may have been wearing jean shorts with a green t-shirt or green long-sleeve shirt. ...
Carbondale man succumbs to injuries following weekend rafting incident
A 74-year-old male died after his boat capsized near the Basalt Whitewater Park on the Roaring Fork River around 2 p.m. on June 8. Vilis J. “Butch” Zigurs, a Carbondale resident, was transported to Valley View Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at 3:25 p.m., according to a Sunday night release from the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.
