Monticello vote reveals divide near proposed data center

MONTICELLO — Candidates who opposed Monticello's proposed data center drew their strongest support in the city voting precinct closest to the 547-acre development, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's general election. Monica Primeau, who challenged incumbent Mayor Lloyd Hilgart, won Precinct 3 by 352 votes, receiving 1,029 votes to Hilgart's 677. It was the only one of Monticello's four precincts carried by Primeau and nearly enough to overcome Hilgart's advantage elsewhere in the city. Hilgart won re-election by just 40 votes, receiving 2,441 votes to Primeau's 2,401. A third candidate, Jeff Rowan, received 710 votes. The geographic pattern extended to the City Council race, where challengers Derek Armstrong and Scott Cutsforth, both critics of the proposed data center, also recorded their strongest performances in Precinct 3. While the results reveal a geographic concentration of support for candidates critical of the development, they cannot establish what motivated individual voters. Support strongest near proposed site Precinct 3 encompasses much of western and central Monticello south of Interstate 94, including neighborhoods along School Boulevard and the city's southwestern edge. The proposed Edmonson Business Center would occupy approximately 547 acres south of 85th Street NE and east of Highway 25, near the precinct's southern

Monticello data center debate puts public trust to test

MONTICELLO — What does transparency look like when a community is divided over a controversial development? In Monticello, the question has become central to the debate over the proposed Edmonson Business Center, a roughly 547-acre hyperscale data center development proposed by Monticello Tech LLC south of 85th Street NE and east of Highway 25. The proposal has raised questions about electricity demand, water use, noise from backup generators and the financial obligations associated with the development. Some residents have accused city officials of withholding information or failing to adequately address their concerns, while others say the information is available but want more explanation of how and why decisions are being made. The city has published studies, development applications and meeting materials on its website. Public meetings have been livestreamed and recorded, an open house was held on the area’s environmental review, and government records have been made available upon request. Yet as the proposal approaches a pivotal City Council hearing Nov. 9, disagreement persists over whether making information available is the same as being transparent. For some, transparency means providing access to information and opportunities for public participation. For others, it means explaining decisions, acknowledging unanswered questions and demonstrating that

Deb Haaland and Peggy Flanagan Mark Their Historic Wins in Intentional Earrings

Last night, the 2026 midterm election results delivered plenty of historic firsts. It was a particularly powerful night for Native American representation: Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman to be elected as Governor of New Mexico, while Peggy Flanagan—the current lieutenant governor of Minnesota—became the first Native woman to win the U.S. Senate seat in her state. (And there could even be a third victory for the Indigenous community today: at the time of publishing this story, Alaska’s Mary Peltola is currently leading the race for a Senate seat, too.)
