Delaware County goes blue as Dems notch historic wins in Ohio

A once-reliable Republican stronghold in central Ohio turned blue in the 2026 election. Delaware County has long been a mainstay for Ohio Republicans . But margins of victory for statewide and national candidates have been slipping in recent years – and both top-ticket Democrats in the Nov. 3 election carried Delaware County on their way to statewide victory. Unofficial results show voters also elected the first Democrat to countywide office in more than 50 years, according to Delaware County Democratic Party chair Peg Watkins. Emma Mirles-Jones , running in a non-partisan race for Common Pleas Court judge, is leading with a 2.3-point margin. Governor-elect Amy Acton is only the second statewide Democratic candidate in more than 100 years to win in Delaware County , following the 2006 win of Democrat Ted Strickland. Acton bested Republican Vivek Ramaswamy by nearly 10,000 votes. But unlike the election 20 years ago when Strickland swept most of Ohio, Acton mostly only won majority votes in urban and suburban counties in the Buckeye State. Marion County to get new school-based health center

Marion County will receive funding for a new school-based health center as part of more than $55 million aimed at expanding health care access for children and families in rural Ohio. The Marion site is one of 17 new school-based health center sites in 15 counties receiving support, according to a community announcement from Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health . More than $20 million will support the 17 new sites and the expansion or continued operation of another 49 centers in 25 counties. School-based health centers provide primary care services on school campuses, eliminating some transportation and provider-access barriers for families. The centers also serve people living in the surrounding community. The announcement did not identify where the new Marion County center will be located or how much of the funding will go specifically to that site. Ohio school district suspends non-varsity sports after tax levy fails

Getting out to vote matters. That's a lesson an Ohio school district is learning in the wake of the 2026 midterm elections. According to the Columbus Dispatch — part of the USA TODAY Network — Pickerington Local Schools is suspending all non-varsity athletics and other extracurriculars. This comes after a 0.75% income tax levy proposal in Fairfield and Franklin counties failed, according to unofficial election results. The vote failed by just around 250 votes, which is less than 1% of all the votes cast. Superintendent Charles Smialek told parents in a letter that all athletic teams below the varsity level and other extracurricular activities have been suspended, effective on Wednesday, Nov. 4, while other activities — including musicals and theater — will continue through Dec. 31. Smialek told The Dispatch that "the district needed to protect academics in the classroom, and hard decisions needed to be made," and the move would be a "short-term proposition." According to The Dispatch, the district faces a $21 million deficit, based on the figures presented to the board.
