‘Not going to stop': Sacramento business owner vows to open as planned despite break in

The owner of a cafe specializing in gourmet cinnamon rolls said the store was burglarized just a week before the official opening date. The owner of Cinnapop Cafe, Chhayleang Tang, posted on Instagram that the midtown Sacramento storefront was broken into on Nov. 4, sharing video of the shop’s shattered glass door. Tang said the burglary happened some time after 10 p.m. Wednesday, and that equipment and tools were taken. “What makes this situation especially heartbreaking is that we haven’t even officially opened our doors yet,” Tang said online. “We are still in the early stages of establishing our business, preparing for our grand opening, and working tirelessly to turn our dream into reality.” In an interview with The Sacramento Bee, Tang said construction equipment was stolen, including a tool cart, a drill and a saw kit. Democrat Amy Slavensky declared victory Friday evening in the competition for a Sacramento County Assembly seat over Republican incumbent Josh Hoover. Her lead grew to 53.1% of the vote for the 7th Assembly District after the county released updated results earlier in the day. They are separated by more than 7,000 ballots. “I’m ready to go to work for the people, no matter who they are, where they come from, or who they voted for, because that’s how I serve and that’s the job,” she said in a statement. But Hoover said he was not ready to concede. “I just think it’s way too early,” he said. “We want to let the elections officials do their job.” The district includes Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova and has 14,000 more Democrats than Republicans. Does SMUD owe you money? How to check for unclaimed checks from the utility

Does the Sacramento Municipal Utility District owe you money? The utility has posted a list of people who have not claimed checks dated between Oct. 1, 2022 and Sept. 30, 2023. Payments that remain unclaimed after Dec. 21 will become property of the utility. “These are checks dated September 30, 2023 or earlier that were issued by SMUD but remain uncashed,” SMUD said in a Friday news release. To file a claim on an uncashed check, call 916-732-7440 and supply the claimant’s name, current address, telephone number and the address for the time period between Oct. 1, 2022 and Sept. 30, 2023. Claims also can be mailed to Sacramento Municipal Utility District Unclaimed Monies, 6201 S Street, Mail Stop B352, Sacramento, CA 95817-1818. Replacement checks may only be issued to the claimant or, upon proof of their death, to their beneficiary. Checks that are not claimed by 5 p.m. Dec. 21 become the property of SMUD under California law.
