Flyers target Oregon Hillel director, sparking antisemitism debate
A flyer labeled Oregon Hillel 's Executive Director Lenny Steinberg an "enemy of the people," but Steinberg said that's the opposite of what he stands for. Pro-Palestinian groups want Steinberg and Hillel disassociated from the University of Oregon. The afternoon of Oct. 3, Steinberg started getting a wave of notifications. He checked his phone, seeing the flyer posted on campus with his image, calling for removal of both him and Oregon Hillel due to his support of "the continuation of Zionism and genocide in Palestine." "It's a pretty strong statement," Steinberg said. "To be called that is quite disturbing. Then falsely accusing me of supporting genocide and supporting, I believe they said the regime in the state of Israel, the current government in Israel. I don't know how they would know that because I've never expressed anything like that." Steinberg has been executive director of Oregon Hillel, which has a presence at both UO and Oregon State University, for a bit over two years. Steinberg said his purpose as Oregon Hillel's leader is to bring Jewish joy to UO and its students. The criticism stems from Hillel International's Zionist views . The organization, which according to its website is the

Exploring the factors leading to Sheldon football's rapid turnaround
The Sheldon football team's abrupt falloff last fall left a void in the Willamette Valley prep sports scene, as one of the area's traditionally strong programs was absent from the postseason. Prior to 2025, the Irish had logged just one losing record this century. Last year, though, with a roster badly depleted by transfers and injuries, Sheldon struggled to a 2-7 finish, marking its worst season since 1992. It appears, however, that was just a temporary blip. Sheldon (4-1, 1-0 Southwest Conference) is one of the hottest teams in Class 6A. The Irish made the trek to Grants Pass last week and emerged with a thrilling 27-20 win over the then-No. 5 Cavemen. Sheldon is now up to No. 5 in the 6A coaches poll and, once again, is back on the shortlist of title contenders in Oregon's top classification. "I think it's a testament to what Sheldon football is — and a testament to the program — that after a down year, we've kind of got that respect back statewide," Irish coach Tyler Martell said. "It's a neat deal. But it's also really early." Sheldon will look to keep rolling this week when it hosts Clackamas (1-4, 0-1 Mt.

UO grad students in 'freefall' after promised teaching jobs axed
Unlike the thousands of other eager Ducks back on the Eugene campus, Peyton Meyer didn't return to University of Oregon for the start of the fall term. Meyer, who uses she/they pronouns, would have been kicking off the second year of her master's program in history at UO. In preparation, she had registered for classes and renewed her lease for another year. But in August, Meyer received an email informing her that the graduate employee position she had been promised had been cancelled. Meyer cannot afford to continue their studies. "I can't underestimate or under emphasize how important this GE-ship is," Meyer said. "It's the insurance that I have for my partner and myself, not just me, my partner. It's tuition, and it's my income." Meyer chose UO largely because she was offered a graduate employee role when she applied, which came with full tuition remission and health insurance. She said that offer was "game changing." Meyer and their partner moved from Colorado to Eugene without ever having visited the city in 2025. Their first year, Meyer worked as a teaching assistant under Andrew Goble , who was charged last year with encouraging child sexual abuse . Meyer said that
