Whataburger confirms first Asheville restaurant. Here's when it opens

ASHEVILLE - After rumors and wishful thinking, Whataburger fans can rest assured that the burger chain is indeed planning to open its first Asheville restaurant. Whataburger has confirmed that construction will begin soon at 275 Smokey Park Highway, Suite 400, in West Asheville. The Citizen Times reported last spring that the fast-food restaurant planned to open in the city after submitting permits. Whataburger is tentatively slated to open in Spring 2027. Whataburger, founded in Texas, continues to expand in North Carolina, including two locations in Hickory, about an hour east of Asheville, which opened earlier this year. Since 1950, Whataburger has become a Southern staple, popular for its original smash burger-style hamburgers and its Fancy and Spicy Ketchup, made with a "secret sauce." More details will follow as the Asheville project nears its opening. In the meantime, check out the restaurant's menu at whataburger.com . Rotten meat, fruit flies lead to 3 ‘C' grades at Greenville Co. restaurants

Fruit flies, food debris and spoiled meat were among the violations inspectors cited in giving four Greenville County restaurants failing grades in October. In all, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture made 387 routine and follow-up inspections for the month. A total of 358 received A scores and 24 B. C is the worst grade the Agriculture Department gives. If a restaurant scores below 70 it has to close until it is reinspected. La Cuchara on Haywood Road in Greenville was inspected on Oct. 27 and given a 72, a C. There was no employee on shift with a food handler’s certification, the report said. The inspector saw multiple employees fail to wash hands when changing gloves when changing tasks from handling dirty dishes to food prep. There were bags of frozen fruit pulps and utensils in the handsink at the server area. An open case of crab in the freezer had ice build-up directly on the product. Eggs and raw beef were stored above produce in the cooler. Various foods were at improper temperature including fried chicken wings, cooked rice, marinara, sweetened condensed milk, and fish. Beloved BBQ joint, once a downtown Greenville staple, reopens in a new location

It took two and a half years, but a once popular downtown Greenville barbecue restaurant is reopening on Greenville County’s Eastside Friday, Nov. 6. “OH, HAPPY FREAKING DAY!!!” the owner of Smoke on the Water shouted on Facebook. “GREENVILLE, THE WAIT IS FINALLY OVER!” They even counted the days since they closed the restaurant in Greenville’s West End close to Falls Park and the Reedy River, where they had operated for 20 years. 957 days. “Countless delays. A whole lot of hard work. And more patience from y’all than we could have ever asked for,” the post announcing the opening said. The new location is 64 Beacon Drive, next door to California Dreaming, in an area rife with restaurants along Interstate 85. The restaurant was started by Frances “Chicken” Lea, her husband Hurdle Lea and Mike Shuler. The Leas were well-known Greenville entrepreneurs. Chicken was a founding member of the James Beard Foundation and board member for the South Carolina Governor’s School, the Metropolitan Arts Council, and the Greenville Art Museum. Hurdle was a textile executive with Fieldcrest Mills, Dunavant Enterprises and Cannon Mills, and founder of the Eastern Trading Company. He served as president of the American Cotton Shippers,
