Code Purple Activated For Monday, Dec. 4
Buncombe County -- Buncombe County Government issued a Code Purple for Monday, Dec 4, 2023. Code Purple is a coordinated effort among Asheville and Buncombe County shelters and other organizations to provide emergency overflow shelter to people experiencing homelessness during extremely cold weather (at or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or 33-40 degrees with precipitation). During Code Purple, participating shelters will provide more beds with fewer requirements than their typical programming. Code Purple sites will also work with participants to refer them to ongoing shelter and housing options.

Candler man charged with 2nd-degree murder in fatal West Buncombe shooting
ASHEVILLE - The Buncombe County Sheriff's office has filed second-degree murder charges against a Candler man after a late-night Nov. 29 shooting killed an Arden man. At approximately 10:22 p.m. deputies with the Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Cherry Tree Drive, near Enka, and found Jeremy Greer of Arden, 41, suffering from a gunshot wound. Greer died after being transported to Mission Hospital.
