A man called 911 in the middle of the night and told officers his 17-year-old girlfriend was dead and he had disposed of her body, North Carolina authorities said.

The call kick-started a widespread search that ended Tuesday, May 14, when the remains of Baylee Carver were found, WCNC reported.

Her 20-year-old boyfriend, Joshua Biles, was arrested May 10, when he called police at around 4:30 a.m. to tell them he had dumped his dead girlfriend’s body using a red Honda Civic, Albemarle Police Chief Jason Bollhorst said in a news conference broadcast by WBTV.

While Biles told police he had disposed of Carver’s body, he didn’t say he had killed her, the chief said.

Biles was charged with felony obstruction and concealment of a death, Stanly County records show. His attorney information is not available in jail records as of May 15.

Search and rescue efforts spanned more than 1,000 miles across three counties, Bollhorst said. Her remains were found in Cabarrus County shortly before 5 p.m. on May 14, four days after the search began , WSOC reported.

Carver’s grandfather, Bennie Carver, told the outlet he was relieved the search was over.

“I can’t believe they had done something like this to her,” he said. “And threw her out like a piece of trash, you know. It’s awful. They don’t even deserve to get out. They don’t even deserve bond. They need to keep them in there.”

Albemarle is about a 40-mile drive northeast from Charlotte.
