Michigan restaurateur lived big while stiffing workers, IRS, feds say

A businessman whose restaurants in northern Michigan reaped millions of dollars cheated the Internal Revenue Service and blew money on valuable real estate, including a $1 million home on Old Mission Peninsula, federal records allege. The allegations against Traverse City resident Christopher Robin Roehler, 65, emerge in an indictment filed in federal court in Grand Rapids and a search warrant affidavit obtained by The Detroit News that reveal a rare tax case and a years-long investigation that shows the power of social media to drive federal criminal investigations. The investigation involves undercover agents, secret surveillance and allegations about a true-crime tale starring a wily felon with a name plucked from a popular children’s story. .oembed-frame { width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0; border: 0; } The records also reveal federal agents have targeted the Rolling Farms Café owner in investigations spanning almost 20 years without success. One probe fizzled after investigators failed to crack encrypted records seized during raids before IRS agents started probing allegations that Roehler had not filed a tax return since at least 2010 and that it appeared he withheld taxes from employees and failed to pay the IRS . The 10-count indictment charges Roehler with failure

5 Best Restaurants in Traverse City, Michigan You Need to Try Before Everyone Else Finds Them

Traverse City, Michigan — a city where the lake’s blue hush meets the laughter of cherry pickers and poets, where Victorian homes lean into the breeze and the air is sweet with the promise of summer. Here, the streets are stitched together by the stories of Ojibwe ancestors, farmers, artists, and dreamers who came for the water and stayed for the warmth of the community. It’s a place where the scent of woodsmoke mingles with roasting coffee, where every block hums with the rhythm of festivals, farmers’ markets, and the slow, golden drift of sunlight across Front Street.

Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,
