ALABASTER – Work continues to make progress on the municipal green in Alabaster as the city expands the Alabaster Senior Center and constructs its new amphitheater which is expected to be completed in time for the city’s annual Christmas festivities.

On Tuesday, May 7, the concrete foundation for the Alabaster Senior Center was poured as workers continue to develop the space which will aid the variety of programs which take place at the center.

“Once it’s done, it’s really going to open up the senior center,” Wagner said. “They are a very active department in the city. They have tons of events and tons of things like dancing and arts classes.”

Wagner said that space has been an issue at the center for the past couple of years and the city has seen a rise in the number of people who have been attending activities at the center.

“It’ll give them a lot more room to hold different events and classes and things like that throughout the day,” Wagner said.

The senior center expansion will feature an open space with a front porch that will face the stage of the amphitheatre and benefit seniors with a new location for programs. The space will also provide a location for seniors or the public during city events.

In addition to providing new space at the center, the city is also constructing new restroom facilities at the senior center which will be accessible from the outside to service guests.

Work is also continuing on the development of the city’s new amphitheatre which will serve as the future venue for many of the city’s annual events including its Fall Fest and the Christmas Water Tower Lighting.

The new amphitheatre is planned to feature a state-of-the-art sound system, a performing stage, a video board as well as loading and unloading areas for bands and storage.

The expansion of the senior center and the new amphitheatre benefitted from the city’s sales tax increase that was passed in February, 2023 and is a part of the Alabaster Fast Forward program.

The Alabaster City Council previously approved the $4,725,100 bid to Clements Dean Building Company for the construction of both upgrades to the municipal area during a meeting on Dec. 11, 2023.

Due to the ongoing construction in the area, the city recently had to move around events that usually take place on the municipal green, including the city’s annual spring City Wide yard Sale.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we’re working over here to construct everything,” Wagner said. “The end result will definitely be worth it.”
