Walmart breaks ground on massive Georgia facility

Walmart has begun construction on a new supply chain facility in Carnesville that store executives say will create faster shipping and delivery of its products. A groundbreaking was recently held at the site for the $1.3 billion facility that is expected to create 1,000 jobs for northeast Georgia. A spokesman for Walmart said Wednesday that construction on the 1.5 million-square-foot facility is expected to conclude in 2029, but a timetable has not been set for the hiring of employees. A groundbreaking ceremony included Walmart executives, local elected officials, and others at the site was dedicated in Franklin County near the I-85 corridor. Walmart executives have reported the facility “will combine advanced automation and technology with Walmart associates to increase fulfillment capacity, improve efficiency and help get online orders to customers faster.” The center is an effort by Walmart to transform its supply chain, the store reported. The Georgia Governor’s Office announced in August that Walmart had decided to locate the new plant in northeast Georgia. Walmart and Sam’s Club have 209 stores in Georgia. Erica Mendoza and her husband Gustavo opened their latest venture on Friday at 508 Oxbow Drive, across from Bartram Trail neighborhood and golf club.
