Kleinhans chairing Sherburne County parks committee
Dean Kleinhans has been named chair of the new Sherburne County Parks and Trails Advisory Committee and James Bedell is the vice chair. The Sherburne County Board of Commissioners established the committee in November and appointed seven members to it in January. Establishing the committee was a recommendation of the county’s new Parks and Trails Comprehensive Plan. In a related matter, the County Board on May 7 appointed Lucinda Meyers, of Palmer Township, as the District 4 representative to the parks and trails committee, after the previous appointee was no longer able to serve.
Candidate filings open for two Elk River City Council posts
The candidate filing period will be open between Tuesday, May 21, and Tuesday, June 4, during office hours. All candidate filings must be received by 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 4. Candidate filings for the following offices are to be filed at the Office of the City Clerk, Elk River City Hall, 13065 Orono Parkway, Elk River: City Council member Ward 2, 3. People can file during business hours. The office switches to summer hours after Memorial Day. Filing fee is $5. The seats are currently held by Matt Westgaard, who has announced he is not seeking reelection to his Ward 2 seat, and Mike Beyer, who has announced he intends to run for reelection to his Ward 3 seat.
Central MN Arts Board awards public art grant to Elk River EDA
The Central Minnesota Arts Board (CMAB) awarded a total of $53,719 in public art grants on May 9, including one for $8,000 to the City of Elk River Economic Development Authority. The money will be used for “Where Energy Flows,” a 7-foot-by-4-foot mosaic created by local artist Carey Dean depicting an abstract representation of the Mississippi River view from Elk River to be displayed within the Furniture and Things Community Event Center in Elk River. ...
Fire academy graduates Baldwin firefighters
Sixteen fire service recruits graduated from the Elk River Fire Academy in an April 24 ceremony at Zabee Theater inside Elk River High School. The firefighters from Albertville, Baldwin, Big Lake, Elk River and Zimmerman departments are members of the 11th graduating class.
