Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I love snacking and noshing – especially with a great glass of wine. So I’m looking forward to what’s happening locally on the grazing scene. Two of the local charcuterie businesses are expanding in our area and opening storefronts in Wilmington. They should both open in the coming weeks – and both will be a place to enjoy meats, cheese and other snacky bits. I can’t wait! Yummy things

After you read about the grazing businesses , you can check out another form of cheese – the kind that’s ooey and gooey on pizza. We recently talked to the owner of Pizzeria Don Luca about how his business is growing in the Brooklyn Arts District.

Bartenders doing cool things

Ever since Olivero opened on Third Street, I’ve been a fan of the bar program established with the help of Robby Dow. Now, he’s got some interesting things in the works for Bespoke in downtown Wilmington . Right now, it’s operating as the popular coffee shop it’s always been. But in the coming months, look for Dow’s take on cool cocktails and extended hours.

Two other local bartenders have been working a barbecue side hustle . There’s one appearance of Circle Pit BBQ scheduled this weekend, and then they said they’ll be focusing on next steps, which could include a food truck. Or maybe a store front.

Local legend

Considering that its been around for almost 60 years, I’m surprised that Frontier Food to Go doesn’t have more name recognition. According to the owner, many people just refer to it as the red trailer on Carolina Beach Road. That doesn’t mean that people aren’t passionate about the good eats that come from that trailer—including my personal fave, the chili cheese dogs. We talked to the former and current owners about the ongoing legacy of this spot.

Chain news

The motto for Frontier is “break the chain, eat local.” But it’s obvious that chain restaurants are still a part of the local industry. As one locally owned restaurant from a small chain announced they were closing this week, we also took a look at some of the businesses that are opening a location or two in the Wilmington area.
