Wade sworn in as Lycoming County DA after Marino resigns

Williamsport, Pa. — Lycoming County has a new district attorney following the abrupt resignation of the county's chief prosecutor this week. Former First Assistant District Attorney Martin Wade was sworn in Friday as Lycoming County’s new district attorney, succeeding Tom Marino, who resigned the same day, citing health concerns. Assistant District Attorney Phoebe Yates was also sworn in as first assistant district attorney. She is the first woman to hold the first assistant position in the history of the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office. Under Pennsylvania law, the first assistant automatically assumes the district attorney’s office when the elected district attorney resigns mid-term. Wade will serve the remainder of Marino’s term, which ends in November 2027. The office will be on the ballot next year. Marino, 74, announced earlier this week that he was stepping down. In a letter to county residents, he described the decision as “a mix of sadness and gratitude” and said he was leaving “due to a combination of health reasons.” He had previously served as Lycoming County district attorney from 1992 to 2002 before becoming U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and later serving multiple terms in Congress. Wade has been first assistant

Williamsport council accepts bid for vacant City Hall building 5-2

Williamsport, Pa. — Williamsport City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to accept the only bid that came in for the former City Hall building at 245 W. Fourth Street, and to move ahead with negotiating a sales agreement. Scott Williams, assistant director of community and economic development and planning, told council the city received a single bid for $455,000 when the invitation-for-bids period closed Sept. 30. After review, staff found the bid complete and compliant. The resolution accepts that bid and authorizes the city to proceed with a sales agreement. Solicitors will negotiate the details, and the finished agreement will have to come back before council for a separate vote. The building sits in the central business district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It would be sold as-is. Terms expected to be worked into the agreement include protections against demolition or major exterior changes, along with a possible right of first refusal for the city if the buyer later decides to sell. The buyer is JBAS Realty of Jessup, owned by John Basalyga. JBAS has indicated it plans to renovate the building for residential use while keeping the exterior intact. The same firm submitted a higher

Williamsport ranks second in Pa. cities where young adults want to build careers at home

Williamsport, Pa. — More than half of young Pennsylvanians say they want to stay in or return to their hometowns to build careers, according to a new survey, with Williamsport ranking second statewide among cities where that commitment is strongest. A resume.io survey of 3,052 adults ages 18–35 found that 51% of young Pennsylvanians are committed to putting down professional roots in their hometowns. Family ties and lower costs of living topped the list of reasons, and those willing to accept lower pay to stay local said they would take an average 10.5% salary cut. The survey ranked cities by the number of respondents who said they planned to stay or return, with a minimum of 50 responses per city. The top three Pennsylvania cities were: ErieWilliamsportAltoona In Williamsport, technical education and manufacturing support skilled careers in the region. East Lycoming school receives bomb threat same day as Union County school

Lairdsville, Pa. — Renn Elementary School was evacuated this morning after a bomb threat was called into the school, according to East Lycoming School District Superintendent Dr. Gregory S. Scoggins. A bomb threat was also made to Linntown Intermediate School in Lewisburg this morning. Police have not said whether the two incidents are related. The call came to Renn Elementary School at approximately 8:35 a.m. Pennsylvania State Police were contacted immediately, and the building was evacuated. Staff and school resource officers moved students safely to an off-site location, where they sheltered in place. When it became clear that state police K-9 units would need additional time to arrive and clear the building, the district began its parent reunification process. All students were either reunited with parents and guardians or sent home on school buses. Two bomb-sniffing K-9 units later completed a thorough sweep of the building and surrounding vehicles. The school was given an all-clear shortly after noon. Scoggins said no students or staff were injured. In a letter to families, Scoggins thanked district staff, Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement, the Lairdsville Community Volunteer Fire Company, St. Mark’s Church, the Lairdsville Cornerstone Restaurant, bus drivers, and parents and

Voters make their way to the polls in central Pennsylvania

Voters can be seen trickling in and out of the Citizens Hose Company Number 5 station in Lock Haven, casting their vote. Gerald F. Poponack Sr. tells Newswatch 16 he's been voting since he was 18, making his way to the polls because he's concerned about the current state of the economy. "It's tough, it's tough, dollar don't stretch far anymore, especially with the gas and the groceries and stuff, so I guess they're working on it; you just have to trust them, that's all you know, that's all."

West Branch firemen to provide gear to Lycoming, Sullivan fire departments

Montoursville, Pa. — The West Branch Firemen’s Association will distribute standardized rural water supply equipment to fire departments across Lycoming and Sullivan counties during an Oct. 31 event in Montoursville. The distribution is the result of a regional standardization project led by the association to improve rural water supply operations, the process fire departments use to move water to fires in areas without hydrants. Departments will receive 3-inch locking Storz adapters and 5-inch clappered Siamese appliances, paid for with support from local partners and donors. The locking Storz adapters create a consistent, secure connection at water fill sites, so any apparatus from any participating department can connect the same way at any site in the region. The clappered Siamese appliances let crews offload large volumes of water from tankers and engines at a fire, feeding attack lines and water distribution systems without interrupting the flow. Equipment incompatibility between departments has long slowed rural water shuttle operations, the association said. In a water shuttle, tankers cycle continuously between a fill site and the fire scene; every delay at the connection point adds minutes to turnaround time and reduces the water available at the fire. Standardizing the connections is meant to shorten

Demolition scheduled for former Triangle Tavern

Loyalsock Township, Pa. — Demolition is slated soon for the former Triangle Tavern building on Shiffler Avenue in Loyalsock Township. Township manager Bill Burdett said a Journey Bank branch building with a drive-through will be built in its place. "Journey Bank is going to occupy that lot and the adjacent lot," Burdett said, referring to the lot where the former Keystone Furniture Restoration stands. The nearby clothing store, Colony Classics, will remain, according to Burdett. Burdett was not aware of a scheduled date yet for demolition, but expects it will occur by sometime this week. Fencing was recently put around the historic pink building, which is close to 100 years old. The Triangle Tavern closed in 2013 after operating as a popular Italian restaurant for more than 50 years under the Casale family. The building at 300 Shiffler Avenue has stood vacant since, with several interested buyers over the years. Several years ago, Harkness Real Estate Partners proposed to build an apartment and retail complex in its place but those plans fell through. Now, after sitting empty for close to 13 years there will be movement with redevelopment. "We're happy to see something go in there," Burdett said. In other
