New rental repair ordinance gives St. Paul renters leverage
St. Paul voters overwhelmingly approved a new "right-to-repair" ordinance , handing tenants a lot more leverage over their landlords when something breaks in their rental housing. Yes, but: The real thrust of the ordinance won't be renters fixing washing machines themselves, but rather to compel their landlords to do it faster. Catch up quick: The Safe Homes St. Paul campaign pitched its proposal as a "break in case of emergency" solution for renters dealing with egregious neglect. Under the language , tenants will be able to deduct half-a-month's rent to pay for repairs if their landlord doesn't fix them after 14 days' written notice. What they're saying: Duluth enacted a similar ordinance a year ago, and the main effect has been to spur landlords into action so tenants don't contract out the work themselves, St. Paul campaign coordinator Cole Hanson tells Axios. Football: Ponies fall short against Prior Lake
SAVAGE — Seeking a fresh start in the postseason, some familiar challenges hampered Stillwater in a 28-13 loss to Prior Lake in the first round of the Class AAAAAA football playoffs on Friday, Oct. 30 at Prior Lake High School. The fifth-seeded Ponies (2-7) were locked in another tight battle through three quarters, but unable to make enough plays down the stretch — or avoid their opponents from seizing those opportunities. “Unfortunately, this feels like a broken record,” Stillwater coach Beau LaBore said. “It feels like most of the games that we’ve played.” The Ponies outgained Prior Lake (360-340), gained more first downs (26-14), and held a nearly 14-minute advantage in time of possession while running more than twice the number of plays (82 to 40), but were held scoreless in the second half as the Lakers (5-4) pulled away for their fifth straight victory after starting the season 0-4. Prior Lake’s reward is a road trip to top-seeded Moorhead (9-0) on Friday, Nov. 6 for a spot in the state tournament. The Spuds join Champlin Park (9-0) as the only remaining teams without a loss among the state’s largest schools. Stillwater moved the ball throughout the game against a
