Schools unite to create more nurses for Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Two Kansas schools are working together to get more students to become nurses.

Newman University in Wichita and Garden City Community College say there is a shortage of nurses, especially in rural Kansas.

So, the two schools are offering a new joint bachelor’s degree program. It lets students complete a Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 12 months. The program has an accelerated four-week pace. Students will have hybrid and online options but will only take one course at a time.

The schools say the nursing students will learn the essentials needed to help patient outcomes.

Last July, the schools partnered so southwest Kansas students could get college degrees without leaving southwest Kansas. The degrees were in business administration and agribusiness at the time, and the nursing degree was still in the works.
