WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s finally time to open your pool up just in time for Memorial Day.

You’ll want to act quickly if you haven’t opened your pool yet. Leaving gunk from winter and early spring could cost you more than the weekend. 90-degree temperatures this week make perfect weather for opening up your pool.

There are a couple of steps you’ll need to take before jumping in. Brianna Roberts with Jelly Belly’s Pools & Spas told 22News the cons of putting off pool maintenance. “My biggest thing is just don’t neglect it because you know the longer you let it sit or the longer that, you know, let it go on and you say I’ll deal with it later the harder it’s going to be to get it up and running.”

If this is how you’re trying to enjoy your pool this weekend, there’s one test you have to pass before you can dip your toes in, testing the pH of your pool is necessary to ensure your safety while swimming. pH levels can be more acidic or basic depending on what chemicals you use, so testing is key.

“As long as you get it as close as you, can, you know you can swim in it. The most important thing is making sure it’s sanitized, so there’s no bacteria in there.”

Acidic water can cause eye irritation while pH levels too high can result in a rash. You can get an at-home testing kit or go to your local pool store and have your water tested. Another step to keep your water clean is making sure you clean your filter regularly throughout the warmer months.
