Marengo agrees to pay $5,700 to settle zoning dispute

MARENGO — The Marengo City Council approved a settlement with Kristen Miller, of 344 W Lucas Street last month after she objected to a zoning change for property next door. Miller’s property adjoins 1403 Lafayette Avenue owned by Marengo Memorial Hospital operating under the name Compass Memorial Healthcare. Compass was not involved in the settlement. Miller and her attorney, Jeff Taylor, first addressed the city council Nov. 26, 2025 after the city, according to Taylor, didn’t respond to a notice of appeal filed on Miller’s behalf Nov. 10. Miller objected to a parking lot constructed by Compass Memorial Healthcare on the adjacent property at the corner of West Lucas Street and Lafayette Avenue. Both Miller’s property and the hospital’s property are zoned residential, Taylor said. A special use was approved by the zoning board, but the permit is supposed to go before the board of adjustment, which it didn’t, said Taylor. Property owners who would be affected by the zoning change should have been informed by letter, said Taylor, but they weren’t. Miller was concerned about her privacy and asked the hospital to put up a fence. During the Dec. 30 city council meeting, Miller asked the city to put

Iowa County may help Marengo with limited city attorney duties

MARENGO — Iowa County has tentatively agreed to share its county attorney with the City of Marengo in a limited capacity. Marengo’s city attorney, Gage Kensler, resigned after being named magistrate in Benton County, according to Marengo City Administrator Ellen O’Rourke. The city was waiting for a proposal from one law firm, O’Rourke said following a city council meeting Oct. 28, but few firms are willing to provide city attorneys. Marengo Mayor Travis Schlabach said he’d reached out to several with no luck. Schlabach and Marengo Police Chief Ben Gray asked the Iowa County Board of Supervisors Oct. 30 if the county attorney would take care of the city’s traffic tickets. Gray said the city averages about two a month. County Attorney Tim McMeen and Assistant County Attorney Tim Dille said they’d be willing to help the city in that limited capacity. They wouldn’t handle nuisance complaints, dog bites or other violations. Supervisor Kevin Heitshusen said that McMeen’s law firm has clients outside of the the county and McMeen could take on the city’s needs through his law office without approval from the board of supervisors. McMeen said he prefers to have the contract go through the county. He and

Johnson County voters reject $94.5 million bond for new jail

Johnson County voters resoundingly rejected a $94.5 million bond for a new jail and sheriff's office. The failed bond comes as county officials spend hundreds of thousands every year to house inmates out of county because of the limited space, a facility that is also plagued with s tructural and plumbing issues . The vote failed with 53% voting "no," and only 46% voting "yes," according to unofficial results. By Iowa law, bond issues must secure at least 60% of the vote to pass. Failed vote leaves county grappling for next steps The failed bond means the county will have to rethink their plans for a 118,000 square foot jail . Johnson County recently committed $3.2 million to fix structural issues and the roof on the current facility. The county will now have to consider a new proposal or spend millions on fixing issues at the undersized jail. Johnson County Board of Supervisors chair Jon Green said the county will have to find a way forward, but first the board needs to take some time to rebuild trust amongst each other on how to move forward. "I think we have to take a beat because we've beaten one another so

A salary, a seat, and a say

The ballots have been cast, the campaigns are over, and Iowa’s newly elected leaders are preparing to take office. For the candidates who emerged victorious, the election brings a new title, new responsibilities, and a taxpayer-funded paycheck. But, unlike most jobs, the salary was determined long before anyone submitted an application — or, in this case, filed their candidacy papers.

Democrats win all five seats on Johnson County Board of Supervisors

Despite a state law forcing Johnson County into a district model, Democrats swept all five Johnson County Board of Supervisors districts on Nov. 3, according to unofficial results. Democrats Lisa Green Douglass, Jon Green, Sue Dvorsky, V Fixmer-Oraiz, and Mandi Remington defeated their Republican challengers with comfortable leads . This year, all five Johnson County Supervisors were up for reelection after Iowa lawmakers forced the county to adopt a district-based representation model rather than the at-large process previously in place. Republican lawmakers who pushed for the law said the current model in Johnson County failed to represent rural voters. The results come as the county rejected a $94.5 million bond proposal for a new jail, a key issue at stake in the supervisor's race. Lisa Green-Douglass to serve a fourth term on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors Incumbent Lisa Green-Douglass secured another term on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, defeating Republican challenger Greg Erceg to represent District 1, which covers North Liberty, Oxford, Shueyville, and Swisher. Green-Douglass received 64% of the vote to Erceg’s 36%, according to unofficial election results. Green-Douglass, 67, has served on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors since 2016. She campaigned on expanding access
