URBANDALE, Iowa — A semi-truck hauling 36 tons of cat food went off I-80 overnight and crashed on its side, blocking an Urbandale road.

Urbandale police say the accident happened at 12:56 a.m. when the westbound truck’s wheels went off the pavement and got caught on the edge. The truck veered off the road and down an embankment just before the 72nd Street overpass. The truck and trailer ended up on its side, blocking 72nd Street.

The driver of the truck received minor injuries in the crash.

There are lane shifts on I-80 because of construction in the area where the truck went off the road.

The 500 block of 72nd Street will be closed until the load of cat food and the semi-truck can be removed from the scene. Police expect that to be late Friday afternoon.
