OHSAA football playoff predictions for second-round central Ohio games

A showdown with one of the best high school football teams in Ohio is Whitehall's reward for earning its first playoff win since 2018. The Rams travel to Ohio Dominican on Nov. 6 for a Division II, Region 7 quarterfinal against Watterson, which won the past two Division III state titles and takes a 39-game winning streak into the matchup. Coming off a 33-7 win over Hamilton Township on Oct. 30 , Whitehall faces its toughest opponent since it took on Massillon Washington in the second round in 2018. The Rams lost that game 35-17 after beating Dover 38-31 the week before, and Massillon went on to a Division II state runner-up finish. The Whitehall-Watterson matchup is one of 20 games on the slate this week for the The Dispatch Predictions Panel. Those 20 games happen to be all of the regional quarterfinals in which central Ohio teams are competing. The panel went 1-4 in Lone Wolf picks last week, moving to 8-34 for the season. Ohio school district suspends non-varsity sports after tax levy fails

Getting out to vote matters. That's a lesson an Ohio school district is learning in the wake of the 2026 midterm elections. According to the Columbus Dispatch — part of the USA TODAY Network — Pickerington Local Schools is suspending all non-varsity athletics and other extracurriculars. This comes after a 0.75% income tax levy proposal in Fairfield and Franklin counties failed, according to unofficial election results. The vote failed by just around 250 votes, which is less than 1% of all the votes cast. Superintendent Charles Smialek told parents in a letter that all athletic teams below the varsity level and other extracurricular activities have been suspended, effective on Wednesday, Nov. 4, while other activities — including musicals and theater — will continue through Dec. 31. Smialek told The Dispatch that "the district needed to protect academics in the classroom, and hard decisions needed to be made," and the move would be a "short-term proposition." According to The Dispatch, the district faces a $21 million deficit, based on the figures presented to the board. Aurora HS grad and KSU pre-med student has 'had quite the journey'

Considering the medical issues she has faced over the last few years, Cassidy Trem could be forgiven for wanting to take it easy. Instead, the Aurora High School graduate, when she isn't engaged in her premed studies at Kent State University, is running marathons. "I have had quite the journey," said Trem. After a long recovery from a serious traffic accident, she ran the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon while a high school senior in October 2023. And just a couple of months after undergoing the last of three surgeries for a medical condition unrelated to the crash, she ran the Barcelona Marathon in Spain this past March. And to top it off, Trem is preparing to run in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on Nov. 7 after recovering from a recent outpatient procedure related to that condition. Trem says that she is determined to fight through her various issues, but admits that at times she has wondered about her various trials. "I just can't believe these things keep happening to me," she said.
