Sutherlin City Council will have a meeting on Monday, November 9th. Councilors will review the Axon body camera contract and consider continuing it for five years, through 2031. The program provides an assurance-based service that includes digital media storage, replacement of cameras and equipment due to damage, loss, or malfunction, and scheduled equipment replacement at the 2.5-year and 5-year contract milestones. The contract also includes maintenance, video evidence storage, redaction software, and integration of new technology released during the contract period, depending on the selected option. COOS COUNTY, Ore. – The estate of a 5-year-old Coos County boy who died of hypothermia just a week before his birthday has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Human Services and the boy’s mother. The complaint, filed on Monday, seeks up to $17 million in damages, alleging that systemic state failures and neglect by the mother led to the child’s death. Joshua McCoy, who was autistic and largely non-verbal, wandered from his rural home on Nov. 9, 2024, and was found deceased in the woods four days later.

ODOT closing Coquille office, consolidating staff in Coos Bay

The Oregon Department of Transportation is closing its Coquille office and moving the staff to Coos Bay in December. The building at 307 Highway 42E is for sale. The owner, VPC Inc. of Eugene, has listed the three-quarter-acre property and building for sale with Pacific Properties. Julie Denney, public information officer in ODOT’s Southwest Regional Office, said the agency decided not to renew its lease for the building, which it has occupied since the 1990s. “Cutting the lease and utilities will create a savings of approximately $9,800 monthly, or $235,200 per biennium, from our regional budget,” she said. “We do not yet have a hard move-in date for our workers in Coos Bay. We will be vacating the Coquille office sometime after Dec. 9 and our lease will expire at the end of the year.” Denney said the Coquille office has about 13 employees, but generates little walk-in business. “It supports employees like construction inspectors and others who do not often work with the general public,” she said. “Most of our services are provided in the field, by phone or online.” Chris Hunter, ODOT area manager in Roseburg, said maintaining its presence in Coquille just didn’t pencil out. “We looked

The Oregon DMV announced that its Canyonville office will permanently close on Nov. 18. According to the Oregon DMV, the office currently has no permanent staff, and the lease is expiring soon. In July the office went from being open three days a week to only being open during limited hours one day a week. During this limited operation the office was staffed by Roseburg DMV employees.

Our Third Space brings a bookstore, public house to Veneta

Veneta’s new bookstore is the talk of the town, according to the folks hanging out at the bar on a Thursday afternoon. Music from the 1920s plays in the background as visitors share thoughts on their newest reads, sip drinks and eat burritos from one of the food trucks stationed just outside. Owner Jordan Mackay plays the part of the business’ host well, clad in a flat cap and vest complete with a pocket watch chain, as he welcomes customers, pours drinks and sells books. A step into the space feels almost like a jump back in time. Our Third Space opened Oct. 3 to much joy from the community. Called “perfect” by a patron who occupied an armchair in the bookstore’s living room area, the business provides just what the name implies: a third space where community members across all walks of life can spend time without obligation to spend money. The bar within the used bookstore sells beer, wine, mead and cider, as well as tea and coffee. Down the hall is Cup of Joe Cafe and right outside is the food truck pod where burgers, burritos and traditional Irish fare are available at different vendors. Our Third
