Hawk Fire, Timber Fire causing hazy morning sky in Redding
Smoke from the Hawk Fire that came too close to neighborhoods in Reno, Nevada and Timber Fire burning in the Big Sur area has been drifting into the Sacramento Valley, turning the morning sky hazy in Redding and other communities in far Northern California. Redding's air could be smoky again on Wednesday, Aug. 26 and for the rest of the week. The haze is so high in the sky, it is not triggering air quality alerts. Readings on Monday and Tuesday were in the moderate to good range, according to the National Weather Service. In a process called inversion, that smoke gets trapped in the Sacramento Valley around Redding and to the south of the city, said Dan Weygand, lead meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Medford, Oregon. The Hawk Fire, sparked over the weekend in the Sierra Nevada, had charred more than 15,000 acres as of Aug. 25. Also, the 93,733-acre Bug Fire that firefighters have nearly brought under full containment along the California-Nevada border was contributing to the smoky conditions. The Timber Fire in Monterey County had consumed nearly 16,000 acre and was 27% contained on Aug. 25, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire

Heat wave breaks before IRONMAN swims, bikes, runs through Redding
Redding and Shasta County will get a break from triple-digit heat before the IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California kicks off on Sunday. But it will still be a warm, intensely sunny week in Redding. Concerns for the health of even the most hale triathletes swimming, biking and running the 70-mile route in Redding’s August heat have race officials taking steps to keep athletes safe. “We have developed a heat management plan … in coordination with our medical team and local healthcare partners,” said IRONMAN race organizers, based in Florida. The race starts early Sunday morning, Aug. 16, taking advantage of what’s usually the coolest time of the day, according to National Weather Service and AccuWeather forecasts . Temperatures will drop into the mid- to high 60s in the pre-dawn hours every morning this week. Once the sun comes up, daytime temperatures rise to the mid-90s every day starting Thursday — a few degrees below Redding’s usual high temperatures in August, according to weather service data . Here’s how hot it will be during the rest of the week, and what triathlon planners are doing to protect athletes and guests from heat-related illnesses. Scorching temperatures, elevated fire risk
Widespread triple-digit temperatures will continue across the Sacramento Valley and foothills today, bringing moderate to major heat risk. These hotter than normal conditions require caution for anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration. We continue to see elevated fire weather conditions today due to the hot, dry, and breezy winds, especially in the northern Sacramento Valley, Sierra foothills, and the Burney area with low relative humidities.
