Wall hits game-winner, Central moves to 5-0
DOBSON — A battle of two unbeaten teams needed all 32 minutes of regulation to determine a victor. North Stokes led by as many as 14 points in the game, but a second-half comeback lifted Surry Central to a 54-52 win. Central led for less than five seconds in the game.
Caudle, Edwards pace Elkin past Falcons
EAST BEND — Every time that Forbush cut into Elkin’s lead during Friday night’s home opener, the visiting Buckin’ Elks responded. Those answers resulted in a 53-40 win for Elkin in boy’s basketball action and moved to 3-2 in the early season. The third victory matches its win total from all of last season.

Lady Elks nab a win over the Patriots
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Buckin’ Elks of Elkin High School hosted the Patriots of Union Grove High School in an early non-conference match-up. The Lady Elks outscored the Patriots in three of four quarters, with balanced scoring from six different players. EHS jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back, taking the win with a final score of 47-22.
Rams battle back, press past West Wilkes in opener
BOONVILLE — The defensive plays that Starmount’s boys basketball team made last Tuesday night may not show up in the scorebook. But they certainly helped the Rams rally for a hard-fought 45-42 win over West Wilkes in their season opener.
Eagles battle back to conquer Vikings in OT
DOBSON — Surry Central overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat North Stokes 88-81 in overtime. Central scored the first two points of the Dec. 4 game, then North Stokes took a lead it didn’t surrender until the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lady Cardinal softballers sign letters of intent
Three East Wilkes softball players have recently signed letters of intent to play in college. Kali Cook signed a letter of intent to play softball for Emory and Henry University. As a junior, Cook became a two-time North Carolina Softball Coaches Association All-District 7 1A selection and a first-time All-State 1A selection; last spring, Cook batted .508 with two home runs and 23 runs batted in to go along with 18 stolen bases.
Lady Elks, Lady Rams host tri-matches
Fans inside Elkin’s and Starmount’s home gyms were treated to the first-ever North Carolina High School Athletic Association-sanctioned girls wrestling matches on their home mats last Wednesday night. And while Lady Elks and Lady Rams came up short in their dual matches, there were several bright spots.
Elkin Swim Team edges out East Surry, Surry Central
PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Elks of Elkin High School swim team competed at the Armfield Civic Center last Wednesday against the Cardinals of East Surry and the Golden Eagles of Surry Central High School. The Lady Elks, already small in number, had four athletes missing due to sickness, but managed to barely edge out East Surry for the victory, winning by one point. Elkin’s men swimmers were able to take the win with a much larger margin, while Surry Central edged out East Surry by two points for second place.
Lady Blackhawks withstand late comeback bid from Starmount
BOONVILLE — A late-game rally came up just short for the Starmount girls basketball team last Tuesday night as it dropped a 57-48 decision to West Wilkes. The Lady Blackhawks led by as many as 18 points and held a 48-33 lead after three quarters.
Mount Airy hosts NW1A Swim Meet
Mount Airy hosted a Northwest 1A Conference swim meet on Nov. 27. Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes piled into Reeves Community Center for the Monday evening meet, which served as Mount Airy’s second of the season. The Bears previously hosted fellow league teams South Stokes and Alleghany on Nov. 15.

PILOT MOUNTAIN — Surry Central and East Surry competed in their second swim meets of the season on Nov. 29. The two Foothills 2A Conference members took part in nonconference action with Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes at the Armfield Civic Center.
Balanced scoring paces Eagles past Elkin
One sequence early in the Nov. 21 boy’s basketball game at Elkin quickly changed the complexion of the contest. That series of events allowed Wilkes Central to pick up a convincing 75-47 win over the Buckin’ Elks inside N.H. Carpenter Gymnasium.
Elkin High School swimmers dive into first win of the season
Both the men and women’s swimmers of Elkin High School took the win in their first meet of the season, a seven-team Wilkes Invitational meet held at the Wilkes YMCA in Wilkesboro on November 16. The meet included teams from Alexander Central High School, West Wilkes High School, North Wilkes High School, Starmount High School, Wilkes Central High School and East Wilkes High School.
Lady Elks Basketball off to great start with two early wins
The Elkin High School Lady Elks varsity basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 basketball season on Friday, Nov. 17, when they hosted their season opener with the Warriors of West Iredell High School. The Elks easily took the win with a final score of 40-11. The Elks then faced off with the Eagles of Wilkes Central High School on Tuesday, Nov. 21. In a much tighter contest, the Elks were able to capture the win in a fight to the finish with a final score of 44-42.
