The Surry County Sheriff's Office is sending out a new warning about a rise in identity theft cases. There have been more reports of residents receiving IRS letters warning them of possible identity theft. The IRS communicates through standard mail, and it never asks for personal or tax dispute information through unsolicited calls, texts, or emails. Anyone receiving such correspondence should ignore it, and report it as a phishing attempt.
