ELK CREEK — A homeowner who fatally shot a person who broke into their home last year acted in self defense, according to the Grayson County Commonwealth Attorney's Office. Commonwealth's Attorney Brandon R. Boyles released a statement on March 29 announcing that no criminal charges will be sought against the homeowner after reviewing evidence obtained during a now completed investigation by the Grayson County Sheriff's Department.

Donithan sentenced to serve six months for animal cruelty
A Hillsville man has been sentenced to spend six months in prison and ordered to have all animals removed from the home after being found guilty of cruelty to animals. After nearly two hours of testimony and evidence in Carroll County General District Court on Friday, Judge Gerald E. Mabe, II found Christopher Donithan, 46, of Hillsville, guilty of animal cruelty and sentenced him to 12 months in prison, six months suspended for having no prior criminal history, and ordered all pets removed from Donithan’s residence at 515 South Main Street in Hillsville. Donithan has since appealed the case to the Carroll County Circuit Court.
