Cardinals name Walker new head football coach

Rent-A-Center in Jonesville hosts blood drive
On May 16, the big red bus came to the Rent-A-Center at 213 Winston Rd. in Jonesville. This is an ongoing partnership between One Blood and Rent-A-Center. Organizers with the blood drive said they have been coming out now for two years and would love to have the community come out for the next one. Due to the efforts of all the people involved they were able to save 33 lives. With more community awareness of the blood drives, they hope to double that number next time. The store manager of Rent-A-Center, Jose Diaz, believes that Rent-A-Center is more than just a business, it is part of a community. One way the company gives back to the community is sponsoring these blood drives.

SCC celebrates May 2023 graduates
DOBSON — Surry Community College held its 55th commencement ceremony in the gymnatorium on the Dobson campus on May 13. This spring Surry had 594 graduates; 244 of which received honors for having a 3.5 GPA and higher. The college awarded 175 Associate in Applied Science degrees, 10 Associate in General Education degrees, 204 transfer degrees, 61 one-year diplomas, and 342 certificates.
Blackburn, Phillips awarded NCHSAA scholarships
Ledger Blackburn, seen here playing football for East Wilkes this past fall, was one of two athletes from the Yadkin Valley Area to be awarded the Mark Dreibelbis Scholarship. Forbush’s Carly Phillips and East Wilkes’ Ledger Blackburn were recently named recipients of the Mark Dreibelbis scholarship for the 2022-23 school year.
Wood Floor of the Week: A Mysterious Pegged Floor
Wood floor pro James Harbour of Harbour Precision Floors in North Wilkesboro, N.C., has seen a lot in his career as a wood floor pro, but he’d never seen a floor like this before. The wood flooring in the first three rooms of the home, built in the early 1970s by Leonard G. Herring, who was part of the management team that built the Lowe’s Companies, had flooring with strip pieces 1¾-inch wide, but throughout the floor they had been assembled into short sections where up to three rows were aligned, and some ends had pegs of the same species.
