Acclaimed author headlines immigrant gala honoring former Miami Herald publisher
Three-time National Book Award finalist and celebrated Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat, known for her writings across cultural lines, will deliver the keynote address on Saturday at the Americans for Immigrant Justice’s 30th anniversary gala in Miami. Danticat, who has long worked alongside Florida’s immigrant rights groups, has a deeply personal connection to the group formerly known as the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center. Its founder Cheryl Little and lawyers played a pivotal role in helping her traverse the U.S. immigration system when her uncle, the Rev. Joseph N. Dantica was placed in U.S. immigration custody after fleeing violent gangs and a political uprising in Haiti. Dantica would die in U.S. custody. His ordeal would become the basis for his niece’s award-winning memoir, Brother, I’m Dying. The book was a National Book Award finalist for nonfiction in 2007. Danticat’s short story collection Krik? Krak! was a finalist for the prestigious prize in 1995. Danticat is once again a finalist, this time for her a newly released novel, Dèy, which tells the story about a woman who witnesses a violent shooting in a Miami mall but doesn’t tell anyone. The book also explores the relationship between Haitians living in the U.S. and those

Miami library supporters to fight for funding amid Amendment 3 cuts
Miami-Dade libraries face big budget cuts after voters passed Amendment 3 — and now advocates are figuring out a path forward. Why it matters: Amendment 3 will deliver a tax break to homeowners but slash funding for local governments, including the Miami-Dade Public Library System, which is funded through a special taxing district. Threat level: Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library has warned that the amendment could lead to mass library closures and job cuts. Amendment 3 is expected to slash library funding by $21 million next year, or about 17% of their budget, according to county projections. That gap would increase to $38.7 million, or 31% of the budget, by 2028. The latest: The nonprofit plans to lobby state and county leaders, and work with partners to find long-term funding solutions. The group is also asking the community to chip in with donations, write letters of support and visit their local libraries to demonstrate the demand. What they're saying: Kristy Quiros, a board trustee and advocacy chair with Friends of the MDPL, tells Axios she hopes private donors "will rise to the occasion, but everybody is about to have their hand out because this is so much more far
