As my 28-year teaching career comes to a conclusion this year, I am revisiting some columns that ran in this space over the past 20 years that told stories from our music department at Tallassee High School. Reeltown boys finish runner-up at state
The Reeltown Rebels’ boys track and field team claimed second place over the weekend at the 2A state meet in Cullman. Led by a first place finish in the 110 hurdles by senior JJ Kendrick and a first place finish by the 4x100 relay team, the Rebels scored 60 team points to edge Holly Pond by just two points for second place.
Holt’s walk off blast leads Indians to state tournament
Mya Holt walked to the plate in the most important at-bat of her high school career. With Wetumpka trailing by one run, Holt looked over to Saraland’s dugout as she thought she was going to be intentionally walked. When she wasn’t, she stepped into the batter’s box with two outs and Bailey Carlisle standing on second base, representing the game-tying run.
Wetumpka rodeo draws nearly 5,000 over weekend
Some of the best bulls, broncs and competitors in the International Professional Rodeo Association and Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association descended upon the dirt of Wetumpka this weekend. Elmore County’s Orr finishes second in javelin
Ally Orr has only been throwing a javelin for three months. But nobody in Gulf Shores would believe that. Orr, a junior, claimed second place in the Class 5A girls javelin throw in the AHSAA State Championships held at Gulf Shores. She tossed a personal record distance of 124-11, nine feet further than her previous record.
School board inks deal to play Prattville Lions football home games in Wetumpka
PRATTVILLE − The Prattville High School Lions football team will have Friday Night Lights this season, but the games will be about 45 minutes down Highway 14. The Autauga County Board of Education and City of Wetumpka have struck a deal for the Lions to play "home" games at Wetumpka's municipal stadium, which opened in 2021. The Lions home turf, Stanley-Jensen Stadium is undergoing a $17 million renovation, and work won't be done in time for the regular season kickoff.
Watson puts on defensive clinic
The ESPN SportsCenter Daily Top 10 Plays segment could be renamed the Ella Watson Top 10 plays after Tuesday afternoon. Watson, playing in centerfield, made three diving catches and a catch at the warning track in Wetumpka’s 7-6 win over Saraland in the AHSAA Class 6A South Regional Qualifier 2 game.
Softball Recap: Wetumpka finds playoff glory versus Pike Road
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Wetumpka had no problem doing just that on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Pike Road Patriots by a score of 9-5. The victory was familiar territory for Wetumpka who now have four in a row.
