Alabama - and specifically Montgomery County - has a syphilis problem. The Alabama Department of Public Health this month issued new data on STDs in each Alabama county for 2022. The state saw an overall decline in all sexually transmitted diseases that year, but syphilis bucked that trend. There was a 40% increase in syphilis cases from 2021 to 2022, and ADPH’s report was topped with a graphic urging people to help “stop the rise of syphilis.”
Man injured, suspect in custody after Thursday shooting
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A man was seriously injured and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Thursday in Montgomery. According to Montgomery police, officers were called to Bowen Drive around 7 a.m. after a call that someone had been shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man with life-threatening injuries from being shot. The victim, who has not been named, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Alabama Driver's License Renewal Scam: What You Need to Know
It seems there is a new way for scammers to prey on people in the state of Alabama. Judge Kim Kervin, overseeing Autauga County Probate, first noticed this scam approximately three weeks ago when concerned citizens visited her office inquiring about undelivered driver's licenses they had renewed online. In Alabama, driver's licenses can be renewed either in person at any of the 67 county probate offices or online through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) website.

On land and on water, safety and security will be central in Montgomery Whitewater operations. On Tuesday, the Alabama Legislature approved bipartisan legislation allowing law enforcement officers to arrest persons for parole or probation violations. Experts warn about ‘Code Orange’ air quality alert for Friday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - There is a Code Orange air quality alert for the ozone in several Alabama counties on Friday. Dr. Weily Soong at Allervie Health says the air quality index is made up of different pollutions which can impact your lungs and your breathing. He says Code Orange isn’t the worst of the alerts but the air could still be unhealthy for some sensitive groups. Alabama prisoner who escaped with jailer's help gets life sentence
FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama prisoner received a life sentence on Thursday for escaping with the help of a jail official who ultimately took her own life as police closed in following a manhunt across three states. Casey White, 39, told those gathered in the Lauderdale County courtroom that he felt like the most hated man in the world but that he wouldn’t drag 56-year-old corrections officer Vicky White’s name “through the dirt,” news outlets reported. He said Vicky White, who was not related to him, was the first person who cared about him in six years. He apologized for the escape, saying Vicky White’s only regret was leaving behind her family. “We just wanted a new life together because she knew the truth. I can handle the truth because I know who I am,” White said. “I chose this road. It’s cost me my life and freedom.”
Juvenile charged with attempted arson of Montgomery business
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A juvenile has been charged with the attempted arson of a Montgomery business. According to Montgomery Fire Rescue, the incident happened Wednesday at 4:56 p.m. inside the restroom of a business on Woodmere Boulevard. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a trash can with burned materials that had been extinguished and moved outside.
