The Longest-Running Bar On Route 66 Is Famous For Its Clowns—And So Much More

My husband has a fear of clowns. It mostly stems from the painting his parents hung in his childhood bedroom featuring a vintage clown who looked like he might make you a balloon animal or he might murder you. But despite this lifelong phobia, my husband agreed to a spontaneous stop at the Circus Room, one of the longest running bars in Amarillo, Texas. In hindsight, he may have just wanted to escape the stifling Panhandle heat that seared our skin the minute we stepped outside our vehicle. But regardless of the motivation, he followed me up to the pale blue cinderblock building with a giant, spray-painted clown face surrounding the front door. Orange and yellow hair shot out from the clown's head like flames while his gaping, black mouth dared us to grab the door handle within it.

3 Questions with With author Sundee Perkins

Route 66 has haunted Sundee Perkins her entire life, so the 37-year-old travel agent who lives on a private animal rescue ranch near Tucumcari did something about it. She spent about seven months researching and writing New Mexico’s Haunted Route 66 for Arcadia Press, who published the book Oct. 6—just in time for the Mother Road’s centennial and haunting season. For Perkins, a New Mexico native and Rio Rancho High School graduate, the book marks her authorial debut—putting to use her degrees in History and Creative Writing from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. When she’s not writing or booking travel for clients, Perkins helps her mother operate a private animal shelter for severe cases of abuse and neglect. Among the hundred or so animals currently in the shelter, Perkins says you’ll find everything from a recently deceased woman’s turtles to a kitten found in a cactus patch who’d escaped chasing coyotes.
