Olympia Museum Takeover Explores Indigenous Futures

OLYMPIA, WA — Since Oct. 2, the Coast Salish Museum of Fine Arts has “taken over” the Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts for a two month exhibition. Through Dec. 11, “Temporal: Stories of Indigenous Present, Re-imagining Indigenous Futures” features work by 14 Indigenous artists interpreting their own ideas of Indigenous futures through mediums including performance art, digital art, paintings, sculpture and traditional Indigenous art forms such as beading and weaving.

1926 was a transitional year between events for the United States, laid right in the middle of the 1898-1934 Banana Wars, and only three years before The Great Depression. Mountlake Terrace wasn’t technically affected by it, not because they were immune to the events of the time, but because it did not exist as the city that currently stands. Mountlake Terrace wasn’t formally a city until 1954, nearly 30 years later. Rather, current-day Mountlake Terrace was once a part of the larger Alderwood Manor.
