Maryland Has An Old-School Drive-In Where Movies Glow On The Biggest Screen In America

Kids in pajamas, a double feature of brand-new movies, and a screen so big it has built a national reputation. That’s a normal summer night at one Maryland drive-in. The gates first opened in 1956. The place recently celebrated 70 years with fireworks lighting up the sky over the lot.

Marker dedication to honor onetime fixture in Glen Rock community

Every year, Jon Nicklow pages back through Glen Rock’s long story to find an anniversary to celebrate. And every year, that anniversary is remembered in bronze. A memorial to the borough’s Community Recreation Building rose to the top of the Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society’s list this year. The Baltimore Street building opened in 1926, though it did not live to celebrate its century birthday. The building, bad roof and all, was demolished in 2010. But memories remain — a host of them. It served as the Glen Rock High School gym, Borough Hall, police headquarters, the Glen Rock Carolers hall, site of countless community dinners and much more. “If you grew up in town,” Nicklow of the Historic Preservation Society said, “you definitely knew where it was.” At one point, the building was expanded to cover the family home of prominent residents Jim and Mark Kroh. Part of the Kroh residence later served as a kitchen for the community building. “Jim would say,” Nicklow recalled, “that he was born under the kitchen sink.” A Glen Rock building does not have to stand to gain a plaque. Baltimore Veterans Day Parade Rolls Saturday, Eight Streets to Shut Down

Baltimore's annual Veterans Day Parade steps off Saturday at noon from Charles and Centre streets, kicking off a roughly two-and-a-half-hour procession of marching bands, honor guards, ROTC programs and military units through downtown. Reptile House in Druid Hill Park

On August 5, 1948, Mayor Thomas D’Alessandro and other Baltimore City dignitaries came by motorcade to Druid Hill Park for the official opening of the Baltimore Zoo’s new Reptile House. They entered an oval room with a shallow, tile-lined pool at its center where small alligators and turtles swam. Set into the walls of the room were brightly lit tanks containing an eye-popping array of local and exotic snakes, lizards, and amphibians. Artists employed by the City’s Bureau of Parks had painted woodland, desert, or swamp scenes inside each tank to mimic the natural habitats of the occupants.

CECIL COUNTY — Veterans Day, when we honor those with a military history who are still with us, will be celebrated across the country Wednesday, and here in Cecil County, there will celebrations for veterans to be recognized and saluted for their service. Cecil County VFW Post 6027 in North East is hosting a Veterans Day Breakfast from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Veterans, whether a member of the post or not, are welcome to a free breakfast in the post hall at 815 Turkey Point Road.
