Overnight closure planned for Eighth Avenue bridge
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Eighth Avenue bridge will close to overnight traffic Wednesday, so Cedar Rapids drivers will have to pursue alternate routes. The closure will be in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday to allow for bridge pile testing, according to a city announcement. Drivers are asked to use alternative routes during that time by following posted detours. The bridge spans Eighth Avenue between First Street SW and Second Street SE. The testing will help prepare for the bridge’s replacement, an estimated $95 million flood control project set to begin next year. Construction on the replacement bridge is expected to take at least three years. Once complete, the single-pier, cable-stayed bridge will be elevated above potential floodwaters and improve trail access and connectivity across the Cedar River.
