Ashville football moves on from Mark Sanders after two seasons

Ashville football has moved on from head football coach Mark Sanders after two seasons. The Bulldogs went 3-7 this season after finishing 6-5 in 2025, Sanders' first season with the Bulldogs. That was the school's first winning season since 2005 and also the first time it made the playoffs since then as well. Sanders confirmed the news to the Gadsden Times early on Saturday morning but declined to comment further. Sanders is an Ashville alum who graduated in 2001 before going to play at Alabama. There he earned a couple of starts as a senior. With Ashville, he earned all-state honors and was a CBS All-American. Sanders was previously the the offensive line coach at Westbrook Christian under legendary coach Steve Smith. He was there from 2022-24 and was the offensive coordinator his first season as well. Previously, he has been the head coach at Donoho from 2017-21 and before that coach Victory Christian from 2014-16. Sanders has a career record of 49-54 with four playoff trips. Alabama executes Michael Taylor by injection for 1991 double homicide

The state of Alabama carried out its third execution of 2026 on Nov. 5, putting Michael Shannon Taylor to death by lethal injection almost 35 years to the day that he beat and murdered an elderly couple in Gadsden. Taylor was 54 at the time of his death and was officially pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. “35 years ago yesterday, Ivan and Lucille Moore kindly opened their home to Michael Taylor," said Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey. "Mr. Taylor repaid [Ivan and Lucille] Moore by beating them to death with a metal bar, all to rob them for money to buy clothing and jewelry. His actions were reprehensible and despite his attempts to evade the consequences, he is facing the Good Lord for final judgement tonight." A year after Coosa Christian ended Tuscaloosa Academy's football season , the Knights returned the favor. Tuscaloosa Academy (9-1) defeated Coosa Christian 37-7 on Friday, Nov. 6, in the first round of the 2026 AHSAA Single A playoffs. It was the program's first victory against the Conquerors (3-7), advancing the Knights in the postseason. The Knights did not start with momentum. Coosa Christian struck first and, as Tuscaloosa Academy exchanged turnovers with the Conquerors in the first quarter, the pair traded blows from on-field mistakes.
