Doctor, legendary PSU wrestler inducted into Centre County Hall of Fame

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Mount Nittany Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine doctor is being inducted into the Centre County Sports Hall of Fame.

Dr. James Martin, MD, has been dedicated to sports since his high school days in Danville, PA, according to a release from Mount Nittany. His love of sports continued as he attended Penn State as a student-athlete. As an undergraduate, he was the 1988 NCAA Wrestling National Champion, a four-time wrestling All-American, and was honored as the top male athlete in the country for two consecutive years.

Dr. Martin also still holds the wrestling wins record at Penn State with 155 wins between 1986 and 1989.

“It’s amazing to see how Dr. Martin has leveraged his elite wrestling experience into his work as an orthopedic surgeon,” Christopher Hester, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Mount Nittany Physician Group, said. “He is a dedicated orthopedics and sports medicine professional who is committed to providing his patients high-quality, compassionate care.”

Martin earned his bachelor of science in pre-medicine at Penn State and a medical doctorate from the Penn State College of Medicine. He then completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala.

Martin credits his wrestling experience with shaping his view of the musculoskeletal system, its capabilities and its ability to regenerate.
