A Living History: Maryland’s Indigenous Past and Present
On this episode of Maryland Unfolded, we learn about the history of Indigenous people in the land now known as Maryland, from the time before British settlers arrived through the first centuries of colonization. Host Dr. Ashley Minner Jones is joined by living historian Drew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pekatawas MakataweU “Black Corn”) to discuss how Native people shaped the region and how Maryland’s contemporary Indigenous communities are working to preserve their histories, languages, cultures, and traditions today. Drew’s heritage includes Indigenous Pocomoke, Pennsylvania Dutch, Welsh, Swiss, English, Scots-Irish, Boyko Ukrainian and Ashkenazi/Sephardi Jewish. In 2021, he was appointed Cultural Ambassador of the Pocomoke Indian Nation of Maryland by Paramount Chief Norris Howard, Sr. and Council Member Norris Howard, Jr.
